Serena B. Miller is an American author best known for writing the Doreen Sizemore series, the Michigan Northwoods series, the Love’s Journey in Sugarcreek series, and the Love’s Journey on Manitoulin Island series. She is a former winner of the Romance Writers of America RITA award and the American Christian Fiction Writers CAROL award.
The Sugar Haus Inn, the first book in the Love’s Journey in Sugarcreek series, was made into a movie called Love Finds You in Sugarcreek. The movie won the Templeton Epiphany Award. She also had a movie made out of her book, An Uncommon Grace.
Miller only lives a few miles from an Amish community and has many Amish friends which helps to inspire her writing. She wrote the Love Finds You In Sugarcreek, Ohio books based on her fascination with these people and their way of life. She would ask many questions of the Amish to the point where she felt the need to apologize for it, but an Amish father assured her that nothing is forbidden as he wanted her books to be accurate. When his family read the book and approved, Serena was thrilled by their approval.
Serena also writes historical novels. This fascination came to her from her father who shared stories with her about the old timber men who cut down the giant pine in the Saginaw Valley. She would read about the years when Michigan was the lumber capitol of the world and learned more and more about it. This ultimately inspired her to write The Measure of Katie Calloway, the first in the Michigan Northwoods series.
The Michigan Northwoods series begins with The Measure of Katie Calloway. The book begins after the Civil War, but there is still conflict in Georgia. Katie Calloway makes the decision to get away from Georgia and her violent husband and makes her way to Michigan. She ends up getting a job at a Northwoods lumber camp, but the owner of the camp, Robert Foster, has doubts if she will be able to handle the work. While Katie wonders if she’ll be able to keep the secret of her past from him.
Under A Blackberry Moon is the second book in the Michigan Northwoods series. A recently widowed young Chippewa woman named Moon Song gives birth alone in the Northwoods and then makes her way to a lumber camp in hope of refuge. When summer arrives, the camp owner enlists Skypilot to help Moon Song and her baby get back to her people. Tragedy strikes in the waters of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula wilderness and now the two must rely on each other to survive. As the two head through the forbidding woods, they grow closer together which leads them to some tough questions: Will she leave her world to enter his? Will he leave her world to enter hers? Or will this connection end before it begins?
The Doreen Sizemore Adventures series begins with Murder On The Texas Eagle. The story follows an elderly Kentucky woman named Doreen who has just seen her brother move to Texas. She believes he should’ve stayed, but then he calls her to ask her to come to Texas and help take care of his sick wife. Doreen agrees and heads to Texas on a train. She finds it not to be as bad as she thought it would be heading in. Then she discovers a murder on the train and she’s certain she knows who did it.
Love’s Journey in Sugarcreek begins with The Sugar Haus Inn. Rachel Taylor is a policewoman who has always look after her Amish aunts. They are the proprietors of a farmhouse near Sugarcreek, Ohio which is popular with tourists who come to check out the Amish goods and lifestyle. One day, a bearded stranger shows up at their door in hopes of finding shelter for himself and their son. The man’s name is Joe Matthews and Rachel finds herself drawn to him, but she is suspicious as well and needs to uncover his secrets before things go any further.
Moriah’s Lighthouse is the first book in the Love’s Journey on Manitoulin Island series. Moriah Robertson is someone who can fix anything. She is the owner and caretaker of a Canadian fixing resort, but the one thing that she can’t fix is the broken lighthouse and needs help to do it. A stone mason named Ben is one of the best in the world at his craft and he’s the right man for the job. He may also be the right man for her as well as the two begin to fall in love. However, they soon learn that they share a horrifying past and it is one that needs to be resolved before they can settle down and be together.
A Way of Escape is a standalone novel from Serena B. Miller. Blake Ramsey, a county prosecutor, fought the war on drugs harder than almost anyone until the day he died of a cocaine overdose. Now, his wife and daughter are left to pick up the pieces. Erin lives with the shame of his hypocrisy and decides to start digging for information, the kind of information that others in the town don’t want revealed. The digging gets her into trouble though and soon Erin and her daughter are forced to run. She is able to find an ally though, a man that she would’ve never expected that she could trust, a man that her husband once convicted of murder.
Miller also wrote a non-fiction book about her time with the Amish. The book was called Inside an Amish Schoolhouse and is Miller’s account of a Christmas program in a one-room Amish school. Watching the children recite and sing their songs reminds her of the reasons that the Amish people once went to jail in order to protect their right to educate their children their way.
