Cassie Edwards is bestselling American author of more than 100 historical romance novels. She has been published by Signet Books, Dorchester Publishing, Harlequin and Kensington Publishing. Cassie made her debut in the publishing world in 1982 with Eugenia’s Embrace and published her hundredth book Savage Skies in 2007. On January 7th, 2008, Mrs. Edwards was accused of widespread plagiarism by the romance novel review website- Smart Bitches, Trashy Books after discovering multiple passages in her books that were directly copied from the works of other authors including reference books, poems, novels, and websites about Native American culture and history. Most of the plagiarized came from old references lacking copyright or whose copyright protection had expired. However one of Cassie’s publisher’s Signet defended her work claiming as fair use rather than copyright violation. Nora Roberts, who was a victim of plagiarism, joined the masses and two days later Signet announced that they would review all Edward’s published work and establish whether plagiarism had indeed occurred. In April 2008, Signet ended Edward’s publishing contract due to what they claimed as “irreconcilable editorial differences.” During an interview, Cassie Edwards claimed that she did not know that she was supposed to credit the various sources, and her husband stated that Cassie only used the references to gain ideas and did not lift any passages.
