Tom Fowler is an American author best known for writing the C.T. Ferguson series and the John Tyler series.
Fowler was born and raised in Baltimore and now makes his home right up the road in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. In addition to his work as an author, he also works in the computer security field. When he’s not working or writing, Fowler enjoys Baltimore sports teams, spending time with his family, and watching movies.
Tom wanted to be a writer from a young age. One memory that he shared on his website is of being out riding bikes with his friend and then returning home to write short stories. The stories were short and not very good, but he kept writing them. At the time he was not willing to kill any characters, even in a murder mystery, but that is something that he has gotten over as he got older. That early writing gave him the “writing bug” though and he hasn’t stopped writing ever since.
He made his debut as a published author with the C.T. Ferguson series. The first book in that series is The Reluctant Detective. It was published in 2017. The story focuses on an unconventional private detective who starts off as a hacker, but ends up working as a detective when his parents demand that he get a job that helps others. He works cases for free, but is paid back by getting on his parents’ good side and receiving money. The series is set in Baltimore which Fowler knows well as he was born and raised there.
Fowler’s writing features a lot of action, flawed heroes, and a lot of snark. He followed up the C.T Ferguson series by adding the John Tyler series.
The Mechanic is the first book in the John Tyler Thriller series. Tyler retired from the army eight years ago, but he still struggles by PTSD. In order to get past it, he takes work as a classic car mechanic and focuses on raising his daughter Lexi who is about to go into college. His life is looking up, but then everything comes crashing down. His former commanding officer is out of prison and looking for revenge against him. The two have a strong dislike for one another that has existed for years and now it is threatening to boil over which puts everyone in Tyler’s life in danger. In order to save his daughter, Tyler will need to draw upon the skills that he thought he put away from good. He needs to stop a monster, but he’ll also need to avoid becoming one.
The John Tyler series continues with White Lines. After the events of the first book, Tyler is back working as an auto mechanic. A woman comes to the shop with a vintage Porsche that needs some work and Tyler talks cars with her for a bit before agreeing to work on the car. Tyler does the work, but when she never returns for the car he begins to get worried. His daughter encourages him not to investigate it, but there is something about it that bothers Tyler and he becomes determined to find out what happened to her. As he looks into her life, he finds himself in the path of a dangerous drug cartel that is getting into Maryland. The investigation will take Tyler out of state and he’ll need to deal with the cartel’s sinister killers. Tyler is in over his head and he’ll need to decide how far he’s willing to go to stop them, and what sacrifices he is willing to make.
The Relutant Detective is the first book in the C.T. Ferguson crime novel series. Ferguson had spent years as an elite hacker. He lived in Hong Kong for a time and worked against the Chinese government until he would found and put in jail. Eventually, they kicked him out of the country and he made his way to Baltimore where he began to work as a private investigator. A woman named Alice walks into the office one day for his first case. The woman is sure that her husband is cheating on her. C.T. looks into the case and instead finds that Alice has her own serious problems. Her troubles get worse and C.T. is put into danger. With his own life on the line, Ferguson will need to work hard to prevent his first case from also becoming his last.
The C.T. Ferguson series continues with The Unknown Devil. A legendary programmer has vanished off the grid and Ferguson can’t help but to try and solve the mystery of his disappearance. Not long after he begins, he is visited by a notorious gangster who is looking to take his criminal enterprise into the digital age. They want to create some ransomware, but C.T turns them down which puts him on their bad side. At the same time, it also puts him closer to cracking the missing persons case. C.T. follows the digital footprints which leads him to a connection between the programmer and the criminal underworld.
The Workers of Iniquity is the third book in the C.T. Ferguson series. An old acquaintance of Ferguson’s has fallen on hard times which leads him to taking on the case of her missing husband and the empty bank account that with him.The search leads him to a hotel room crime scene and a ruthless loan shark. The husband was dead, but taking care of the husband isn’t where they ruthless loan shark will stop. Ferguson’s search leads him to a sinister black market where humanity’s worst sins are sold to the highest bidder. C.T. must act quickly to stop their operations before more victims fall prey. He’ll have to do it unnoticed as well unless he wants the criminal syndicate after him as well.
