The Long, Tall Texans series is a popular long-running book series of contemporary romance and western novels. It is comprised of a total of 48 novels and several novellas, which were released between the years 2003 and 2017. This series is written by a famous American author named Susan Kyle under the pseudonym of Diana Palmer. Each and every novel of this series features a different set of central characters, whose romance stories are described by author Palmer. The author has specifically centered the plots around the strong male characters, who go on to fall in love with mind-blowingly gorgeous female counterparts. Author Palmer has done the setting of all the books of this series in Texas. With every book depicting a unique story, the readers liked them very much and felt intrigued towards all the books in the series. This helped in the worldwide success of the books as well as an overall success of the whole series.
Author Diana Palmer was born as Susan Eloise Spaeth on December 11, 1946, in Cuthbert, Georgia, United States. Her parents, William Olin Spaeth and Maggie Cliath, worked as a college professor and a nurse respectively. Palmer was the eldest of all the siblings. She believes that she received a large part of her inspiration from her mother, who was among the first people of the world to have started the liberation movement for women, which became fashionable many years later. While Diana Palmer was growing up, she developed an interest in reading the books of Zane Grey. Her particular interest was in reading about the cowboys. Later, after the completion of her college studies, author Palmer took a job as a newspaper reporter. She went on to continue doing this job for a long stretch of 16 years. During her journalism career, Palmer worked for both the weekly and daily newspapers. In 1972, Palmer decided to get married and take on James Kyle as her beloved husband. The two settled down and began their family in Cornelia. They have been residing there since then. After a few years into her marriage, Palmer thought of trying her hand at writing stories. She began by writing romance stories. Her interest in writing grew even more after the birth of her son name Blayne Edward in 1980. Palmer used to spend a lot of free time sitting at home while taking care of her infant son. Eventually, she began using this time to work on her romance novels. The first time she attempted to sell a romance story was in 1979. It was also the first time when she adopted Diana Palmer as her pen name. Later on, Palmer started using other names such as Katy Currie, Diana Blayne, and her original name for writing her books. As of today, more than 40 million printed copies of her books, novels are available in the market worldwide. They have been translated into numerous foreign languages throughout the world. Author Palmer has been listed in a number of publications such as the Love’s Leading Ladies, Contemporary Authors by the Gale Research, The Writers Directory, Historical Writers, etc. In addition to this, author Palmer has even won many prestigious awards, including the Waldenbooks Award, the Dalton Award, the Bookrak Award, Affair de Coeur Award, the RWA Award, etc. Palmer has received all these awards on multiple occasions for her immensely popular writing style, along with a Lifetime-Achievement Award as well. Palmer was inspired by her loving husband to continue her studies at 45 years of age. She graduated from the Piedmont College in 1995 and achieved her degree in history along with two minors in Spanish and archaeology. Palmer was even named to a couple of honor societies, the Alpha Chi and Torch Club. Currently, she is pursuing a master’s degree from the California University. Palmer has high hopes in specializing in the studies of Native America. She is an active member of numerous foundations of history and several charitable organizations. Palmer has not given up writing and is currently working on the development of her next book. Other than writing, she is also interested in astronomy, gardening, anthropology, music, archaeology, and iguanas.
The debut book of the Long Tall Texans series written by author Diana Palmer is entitled ‘Calhoun’. This book was released by the Silhouette publishing in the year 1988. The chief characters mentioned in the book include Calhoun Ballenger and Abby Clark. Palmer has set the story in Jacksonville, Texas, United States. At the start of the book’s story, it is shown that Abby Clark hates it when she gets the treatment of a child by others. She knows that she was very small when she had come to stay with the Ballengers, but now she wants Calhoun to realize that she has grown up. After being sick of receiving the same treatment, Abby Clark decides to work out a plan for proving her independence and capturing the attention of Calhoun Ballenger. However, her plan backfires on her. Abby realizes that she is not the type of woman that Calhoun likes to spend his time with. And after this incident, he becomes much more protective towards her. Abby wonders how could she make Calhoun acknowledge that he has strong feelings for her and in the process, express her own feelings too?
Another very successful book of this series is called ‘Justin’. It was also published in 1988 by the Silhouette publication. Once again, the plot is set in Jacksonville, Texas. The main characters described in this novel include Shelby Jacobs and Justin Ballenger. At the beginning of the story of this book, it is depicted that Justin Ballenger is handsome rancher, who is haunted by the events of his past life. He always dreams about getting close to Shelby Jacobs and always looks to help her out in any situation. But, his past begins to haunt him so much that he starts wondering whether he will be able to come to Shelby’s rescue when she will need him the most? Shelby and Justin had met for the first time around 6 years ago when Justin’s younger brother, Calhoun, had introduced them to each other. They got attracted to one another instantly and decided to get engaged. Shelby did not even mind the 10 year age gap between them as she was strongly in love with Justin. Justin had a poor background and always wished to do a great deed that would make him famous. On the other hand, Shelby always lived the life of a socialite. Due to these differences, Shelby ends the engagement, leaving Justin heartbroken. However, the situation of both Justin and Shelby miraculously as Shelby’s father loses all his wealth and Justin succeeds in becoming famous. The two meet again and this time, it is Justin, who has the command in his hand. As time passes by, Justin learns the real reason why Shelby had broken the engagement and this makes him respect her even more. They come close again and start living a happy life.
