“The Bravos of Valentine Bay” by Christine Rimmer follow the life and times of the children of the family patriarch George Bravo. The patriarch was born in San Antonio at the Bravo Ridge Ranch, where he spent most of his childhood before he moved to Valentine Bay Oregon to make his fortune. It is a charming seaside town that borders Washington State and it is here that he got married to Marie Valentine a local heiress. Together they had taken over the family business though Marie was more of a free spirited type and influenced George who soon developed a love for travel too. They had nine children over the years but at the start of the story only Marie’s uncle Percy and Aunt Daffodil are still living. Uncle Percy is an amateur sleuth who can find almost any secret and knows everything about Marie’s family. When Marie and George die from a Tsunami while traveling in Thailand, it is left to Daniel to take care of the rest of his siblings. Daniel was by then an eighteen year old lad but soon after he got married to Lillie Snow his high school sweetheart. The two would then become the parents to Daniel’s sisters and brothers.
In “The Nanny’s Double Trouble,” the first novel of the series, Daniel single handedly managed to raise his siblings and is left to take care of the youngest sister still living at home. But he is desperate for freedom and is left devastated when Lillie Snow his wife dies during child birth. His mother in law steps in to help him take care of the twins left behind by the mother. But then she gets involved in an accident and Keely his niece volunteers to help. Keely is still dealing with grief over the death of her cousin though she soon develops some great rapport with Daniel. Keely loves helping out with the twins and sometimes ends up running interference between Grace and Daniel. She is his sister that loves a battle of wills and is always coming after him. Even though there is a familial connection between Daniel and Keely, they agree to an uneasy truce which is broken when they are involved in an embarrassing encounter. As they try to suppress the growing attraction, they worry what people will think when they learn of their involvement.
“Almost a Bravo” is set five years since Aislinn Bravo was working at a ranch owned by Martin Durand. While working there, she had developed a huge crush on Jaxon his adoptive son. Martin recently died and Aislinn is asked to attend the reading of his will and she does not know what to make of it. She is curious to know and attends the reading even though all she gets is some devastating information. She learns that she had been switched at birth and the decree read out changes her life forever. Meanwhilem, Jaxon had found a wife and a few years later he got divorced and vowed to never remarry as he made the ranch his life. But his adoptive father has said that he had to get married to Aislin Bravo and stay in the marriage for at least three months if he is to get the inheritance. Even though Aislinn stands to get a cash settlement, she does not want to take the ranch away from Jaxon as she knows just how much he loves it. She is guilty about her schemes five years earlier and her disquiet and sadness at learning she was not a real Bravo has left her feeling vulnerable and confused. Moreover, Jaxon has expressed his willingness to get married to her but she is not sure than man can convince her to stay married. All she wants is to move on with her life.
In “Same Time, Next Christmas,” Matthias Bravo and Sabra Bond meet when he goes to his cabin to have a quiet Christmas alone as he does every year. This first meeting (one of four over a four year span), takes place when he reaches his cabin and is alerted to someone inside and sees a woman. He thinks that she is an intruder, and is somewhat correct as Sabra has taken shelter from a storm. He enters with a weapon not knowing if she is alone or dangerous. Matthias is very distrustful at first and having injured himself on the way to the cabin is bleeding from a self inflicted wound. After being convinced that Sabra is not dangerous, he allows her to attend to his wound. They are stranded together because of the storm and Sabra takes care of Matthias until he is well. They form a relationship that becomes something more during their trapped in the cabin. They’ve both decided not to see or communicate with one another after they leave the cabin but Matthias gives her a key and they agree to meet at the same time next year.
