Dungeon of Dread
Dungeon of Dread comes first in the Endless Quest series. The book introduces us to a human named Caric. A chance meeting with Laurus the halfling sends Caric on an adventure in a dungeon filled with monsters and riches. Laurus’s tales of the vast riches are so enticing that Caric is willing to brave the deadly dungeon and the evil wizard Kalman who rules it. Caric sees a warning that urges him to be careful about the water that is not really water and the basilisk at the gates to the dungeon. Determined to explore the dungeon still, Caric and Laurus get into the dungeon setting the course for an exhilarating adventure.
In this book, you are Caric, a brave knight just getting into the world of dragons. As you go deeper, you will encounter many exciting adventures. It is amazing that that you get to choose which action to take. You can opt to fight the monsters that will come at you in the dark or find a way of tricking the evil wizard. Another option is to run into another corridor without knowing what you will find there. It is great that the challenges here and the thrills do not end with your first reading. If you pick a different path in your next reading, you will enjoy a totally different adventure. Can you solve the Dungeon of Dread mystery?
If you never played Dungeons and Dragons, this gamebook gives you a taste of it. While such books were popular in the 70s and 80s, they have now been taken over by video games. Any video game player will find this volume exciting and the adventures exhilarating. The book is particularly suited for young readers being introduced to the fantasy world. Since there is only little danger, kids can enjoy the ride as they overcome different challenges and encounter all kinds of creepy elements. The illustrations throughout the book are enjoyable and will keep you rereading to see how they tie with different aspects of the story.
Dungeon of Dread is an intriguing book that closely simulates the D &D adventure experience. Unlike most choose-your-own-adventure gamebooks, this one stars an adult. While the book is designed for young minds, they assume the adult character allows them to enjoy the adult experience. Caric will be experiencing adult problems, and the adventure comes complete with a halfling sidekick. The choices at your disposal are clear from the start, and, amazingly, there are many ways to succeed. For D & D fans, the book allows you to meet all those familiar monsters that made the game so intriguing.
Mountain of Mirrors
Mountain of Mirrors comes second in the Endless Quest series. In this book, the author puts the reader into the body of a young elf known as London. Aralia village has been cut off from that rich land after the mountains. This spells doom for Aralia since this means that the caravans will not be able to reach the village come winter. While the elders had sent a few soldiers to go and access the situation, none had returned. London, the elf volunteers, has to see what he can do to save his people from starvation. To complete the mission, London has to cross Shanafria, otherwise known as the Mountain of Mirrors.
As London, you have to make the long journey to the mountain armed with nothing but the Sword of Magus. You get to the mountain only to discover an enchanted ice door. Before you can make any move, you hear screams alerting the guards of an intruder in the mountain. You hear heavy footsteps approaching and a voice commanding them to get the intruder. What do you do? Well, the author offers you two choices. You can decide to either fight the guards or run down the staircase blindly without knowing what awaits you on the other side. Join London on this adventure and discover what danger lurks in the mountain of mirrors.
This book by Rose Estes allows young boys and girls to go on different adventures and learn a few things in the process. The writing style is fun and designed to encourage reading. Like others in this series, this volume starts with a general description of the reader’s persona. There are also different distinct paths the reader can take and see where they lead. While the right path is clear, it is fun to take the wrong one at times and discover the dangers lurking in the darkness. Aside from the fact that the reader chooses their adventure, this book also comes with great illustrations. You will find yourself looking through them even when you are not doing a quest.
Mountain of Mirrors is a great fantasy book for young readers. The adventures will not only encourage them to read but also expand their thinking. This and similar gamebooks are perfect if you want to reduce your kids’ screen time. There will still be thrills and mild scares, but the young minds will be immersed in reading and developing a reading culture. The setup and setting are also outstanding, not to mention the well-developed monsters. Based on the D&D games, this book comes with familiar characters that those who played them can identify with. However, it still reads like an original creation and comes with a lot more than expected. You can expect to enjoy great characterization and art, intriguing concepts, and realistic adventures.
