Savage Horizons is the first book in the Blue Hawk Saga series, published in 1987. The main character of this series, as you can imagine, is named Blue Hawk. He was born into the culture and world of his Cheyenne parents. When he is adopted by a trapper who happens to be white and not Cheyenne and given the name Caleb Sax, it is the beginning of an entry into a world that is different from everything that he knew.
At first, it is difficult for Blue Hawk to adjust to the many ways of the white man. On top of that, he encounters prejudice wherever he goes. It is very obvious to see that he is an outsider and not every white person is friendly to him. Even though he is being brought up as part of the white world by his adoptive parents, Blue Hawk makes an effort to remember where he came from and what his blood means.
Caleb’s adoptive parents also have a natural born daughter named Sarah. They love Sarah and Caleb equally, and they grow up together. But Caleb and Sarah also have wild feelings for each other, and their desire for each other is undeniable even though it is forbidden. Although not related by blood, they technically are brother and sister.
When a horrible accident means that Caleb is left for dead, then much is revealed. Sarah is carrying Caleb’s baby as a result of their many trysts. But when this information is revealed, she and her baby are taken away and she is forced to enter into a marriage with a man that she not only has no love for but is a brute on top of it. If only Caleb were not dead, and she was not carrying a baby into this world without its true father.
Caleb and Sarah both think that the other one is dead, but their love for each other goes on. As they go on and try to make their way back to each other, it turns out that their love for each other and their desire to be together will never die and will help them surmount every obstacle in their way. Full of triumph, passion, tragedy, and power, Bittner’s first novel in the Blue Hawk series features realistic characters struggling in the face of what ends up being their lives in a historical time and place in American history.
Frontier Fires is the second book in the Blue Hawk series. The main character in this book is once more Caleb Sax. Although he is part Cherokee and his name is Blue Hawk, he is still also known to the white man as Caleb. Not only is he a brave and daring man, this half-breed Indian man fell in love with a white woman named Sarah and was not afraid to take her for his own. With her by his side, they are doing their best to raise a dynasty and powerful clan in the middle of the heart of mighty Texas.
It is not an easy time in history, as the Texas territory is torn apart by conflict. They have conquered many obstacles in their time together, and now they are together and going to raise a family that is going to stand strong in a land that is going through a lot of trouble with conflicting forces. In Texas, the Sax clan is more than willing to fight their enemies. These include the Comanches who want to get rid of the Sax from the territory and take it for themselves– and the white man new to the land that greedily want to snatch up as much of the land and the natural resources for themselves as they can.
But the newcomers and the Comanches aren’t the only issues to deal with, as war with Mexico over a free republic is threatening to break out. This war would put the Sax clan up against an army of Mexicans that are in the thousands, and with those numbers, it is a certainty that a great many will be injured or killed, with the possibility of none surviving. If the war breaks out it means the death of hundreds of the Sax clan and possibly the end of their existence forever.
Caleb and Sarah have a beautiful daughter Lynda, who has the same half-breed blood as her father. She is also as reckless and brave, and she gives her love to a man that she cares for dearly. At the same time, she vows that this man will never conquer her unyielding spirit. Tom is the son of Caleb and he is willing to not only fight for his family and the country but to die for it too. Then there’s the white woman that Tom has deep feelings for and wants more than anything to make his wife. With war on the horizon, will Caleb’s children risk it all for love? Find out in the exciting conclusion of Frontier Fires.
