Robert J. Crane is an American author of fantasy novels. He was born and grew up on Florida’s Space Coast. He graduated from the University of Central Florida where he majored in English Creative Writing. He worked briefly as a substitute teacher and then in the financial services field for considerably longer while writing in his spare time. He currently lives in the upper Midwest in the U.S. mostly thanks to its cooler climates and superior beer.

He is the author of fantasy based novels and series and has written quite a few books in those series. His three series include Sanctuary Tales, which has eight novels in total. Defender is the first novel in the series Sanctuary Tales and was published in 2011. He is also the author of the series Girl in the Box, with ten books total making up this fantasy series. He is also the author of the Southern Watch series, the Out of the Box series, and a collaborator with Nicholas J. Ambrose on the series Shattered Dome.

The main character in Defender is Cyrus Davidson. He leads a guild in the capital of Reikonos, occupied by humans. He lives in the world of Arkaria in which there are many dangers that mostly come in the form of life-based beings like titans, goblins, and dragons. The living beings in this world either live a very ordinary life or they choose the many adventures waiting in Arkaria. Those who pursue adventure in this world are sure to find it, as there is a never-ending fascination that comes with the beings and the events in this world for those who have a calling for it.

Cyrus is a good leader and a warrior to boot. He also has many friends and different relationships with wizards, druids, healers, paladins, necromancers, and more, not to mention the various elves, trolls, and other races. Cyrus really just wants to have adventures, so when he has an unexpected encounter with the Sanctuary guild it may just be fate taking a hand. After all, the Sanctuary is famed for their noble ideals and Cyrus could do worse than falling into league with them, as they have a good standing in the area.

When he is caught in a very bad situation, mainly being caught in the den of a dragon and facing certain death at that, they are saved unexpectedly by the Sanctuary fighters who extend an invitation that promises for even greater adventure. The guild of Sanctuary is filled with people who are loyal, strong, and willing to fight for the weak. It isn’t long before Cyrus is caught up in a mystery and adventure as they work to figure out who is taking weapons of huge power and for what?

It may be that Sanctuary and its fighters are the only things that stand between total destruction and the world of Arkaria. Along the way we meet many characters, from Orion to Alaric and the somewhat arrogant Vara. The sense of adventure is fully realized in this book by Robert J. Crane and the world includes many fantastical beings with different abilities and dangers, as well as the current problem of who is stealing the very powerful weapons that could threaten them all. This book is like a role playing video game online brought to life with every aspect of fantasy that any fantasy reader would be looking for– plus swords and dragons!

Avenger is the second novel in the Sanctuary Tales series and was also published in 2011. This book also takes place in the same world as that of Defender, in Arkaria. We are back once more in the world of goblins, dragons, and more. The people who live here are faced with the two choices of living an ordinary life or becoming an adventurer and seeing what is out there in the world. Cyrus Davidson is back, and he remains a warrior, and so is the girl with the hard shell Vara. As the adventures with the weapons recede into the past, he is drawn in once again into all of the action thanks to a seemingly random series of attacks.

Attack after attacks on the convoys brings suspicion from all that the Sanctuary guild may be involved in the attacks. When this happens Cyrus knows that he must put aside his personal baggage at the moment and attempt to find the raiders so that the attacks may finally stop. But what can he do if he never finds the raiders and the attacks only get worse? That is exactly what happens and the attacks keep coming.

In the midst of all this chaos, Vara starts to realize that she has a bit of a crush on Cyrus. This is in stark contrast to any feelings that she had before that! The members of the guild in the meantime must deal with the accusations against them when they are said to be the ones thieving and attacking other countries and lords of power on top of that, so there is not all the time in the world for romance (but maybe enough for it to blossom along the way). This is a bit of trouble because they cannot really prove that they are not behind it, only attempt to try and stop the people who are doing it in the hopes that the attacks cease.

In the wake of such high stakes, Cyrus must call upon his friends as they all find their allies quickly abandoning them and the panic and suspicion mounting. The members of the guild are under pressure to come up with the riches that were presumed stolen by them or find the people doing it. They are surrounded by their enemies and feel that they have no safe place to go, so they must confront the possibility of the end of their guild and even a coming war that may just take over their world in Arkaria and change it forever.

Cyrus is on the brink of fulfilling all of his goals, but will there be a price for the closure? in Avenger, Cyrus lives up to the title as he seeks revenge and becomes the bringer of vengeance incarnate as the world hangs in the balance.
