The Rainbow Magic book series is a widely popular series of children’s fiction and fairy tales. It is written by a group of four writers, Sue Bentley, Narinder Dhami, Linda Chapman, and Sue Mongregien, under the common pseudonym of Daisy Meadows. The series features humans and fairies as the main characters. After the release of its first book in 2003, the authors have added more than 200 books so far. The series is actually a parent series of several sets of fairy books and special edition volumes. They include The Rainbow Fairies, The Weather Fairies, The Jewel Fairies, The Party Fairies, The Ocean Fairies, Fun Day Fairies, Pet Keeper Fairies, Petal Fairies, Dance Fairies, Sporty Fairies, Music Fairies, Green Fairies, Twilight Fairies, Princess Fairies, etc. This series is owned by the Hit Entertainment, and its books are published under the banner of Orchard Books. In the entire series, the authors have depicted the life stories of the two main human characters, Rachel Walker and Kirsty Tate, as they undergo numerous magical adventures along with a number of fairy friends. Due to the vast number of ideas with each of the 4 authors for writing the stories, they decided to publish them under a collective pen name. Hence, they came up with the name Daisy Meadows as the name of the author to feature on the books’ covers.
George Ripper is the illustrator of all the stories, and is assisted by a few uncredited illustrators. In 2010, the books of this series were borrowed the most by young readers at the libraries in the UK. In the United States, the series is distributed by the Scholastic Inc. This publishing house has changed the names of some individual books and series for marketing purposes. The series is still being written and its books can be found commonly on Amazon. Earlier branched series contained 7 books each, but starting from the School Days Fairies, they consist of only four books. A movie adaptation based on the series has been developed under the title of Rainbow Magic-Return to the Rainspell Island. The list of main characters mentioned in the entire series include Jack Frost, Rachel Walker, The Goblins, Kirsty Tate, King Oberon, Mr and Mrs Tate, Mr and Mrs Walker, and Queen Titania. Their descriptions given by the writers are as follows:
Rachel Walker is best friends with Kirsty Tate. She is one of the two lead protagonists and has a caring & friendly nature. She has curly, golden, long hair and blue eyes. Rachel loves to race with the dragonflies and do loop-de-loop. Typical interests of Rachel Walker include mechanical inclinations like fixing bicycles, lawn mower, etc. Rachel aspires to become a car racer or helicopter after growing up. Due to her kind nature, Rachel tends to feel sorry the antagonist, Jack Frost, thinking that he does not have friends nor anyone to love him. Initially, Rachel seems skeptical about the magic, but feels amused by it after meeting the fairies. Kirsty Tate is another lead protagonist and the closest friend of Rachel Walker. She has dark brown hair with a ponytail. Kirsty feels nervous about flying, but she tends to forget about the fear when she realizes the urgency of the situation. Kirsty loves to figure out puzzles and riddles, and is very good at solving mysteries. She wants to become a famous detective or an archaeologist later in life. Kirsty Tate is clever and kind. She is fun-loving, adventurous, and loyal. She is quite imaginative, fast, and believes in magic. Kirsty in known to be a village girl, hailing from Wetherbury Village. She loves dancing, music, and pretty much everything that is adventurous.
Kirsty has a great interest in singing, although she is well aware the she is quite awful at it. Jack Frost is another very important character in all the books. He serves as the main antagonist. He joins hands with the goblins to cause problems in Kirty & Rachel’s lives and hurt the fairies. Jack has blue eyes, frozen hair, and a beard. He keeps changing his outfits in different books. Jack Frost has a greedy and ruthless nature. Whenever he wishes get things done, he orders the goblins to do them for him. But very often, he ends up doing things himself because of the clumsy nature of the goblins. Jack’s deepest wish is to rule the Fairyland. He hates the fairies and wants to take away their magical powers. Whenever Jack hatches an evil plan to hurt the fairies, Rachel & Kirsty come in his away and defeat him every time. Jack possesses teleporting abilities. Very often, he freezes others with his powers.
The debut book of the Rainbow Magic series written by Daisy Meadows is entitled ‘Ruby: the Red Fairy’. This book was first published in 2003 and then again in 2005 by Scholastic, Inc. It features the primary characters as Rachel Walker, Kirsty Tate, and seven colorful fairy sisters. The story begins by showing that the seven fairy sisters live in Fairyland. They are known by the ones around them as Rainbow Fairies. These fairies help to keep the Fairyland bright and dazzling. But, they face an evil enemy in the form of Jack Frost. Jack sends the fairy sisters away, thereby landing them in a huge trouble. With the intention of taking over Fairyland, Jack Frost atrocities on the fairies. The sisters fear that if they do not return to Fairyland in time, it will become doomed and turn gray forever. As they are not able to do anything on their own, the fairies pray for someone to fight against Jack Frost and rescue them. This is when best friends Kirsty Tate & Rachel Walker enter into the plot as their saviors. When the girls arrive in Fairyland and find that the seven fairies are missing, they become worried. Immediately, they set themselves on their trail and look for them in every possible place. They come across Ruby in a pot located at the rainbow’s end and save her. By saving Ruby, the girls get one step closer at bringing back the sparkle to Fairyland.
Another interesting fairy story penned in the series is called ‘Honey: the Sweet Fairy’. It was released by Orchard Books in 2005. This book consists of the central characters as Queen Titania, King Oberon, Kirsty Tate, Jack Frost Rachel Walker, and 7 sister fairies. At the plot’s beginning, King Oberon and Queen Titania are shown as making plans for celebrating their 1000th jubilee. They hand over the charge of making arrangements for the celebratory party to the 7 Party Fairies. The sister fairies step up to the task and start with the arrangements to make it extra special. But, Jack Frost hatches a plan to sabotage the party. He sends the goblins for stealing the magical bags of the Party Fairies and then throws a party of his own to make look better and bigger than Oberan’s and Titania’s. But, before he could succeed in his evil plan, Rachel and Kirsty come to the rescue of the fairies. They help Honey to recover the party bags teach a lesson to Jack Frost in the process.
