Rachel Higginson
Rachel Higginson is a best-selling author in the romance and young adult categories. Some of her best works include The Five Stages of Falling in Love, Bet on Us, and Opposites Attract series. Born and bred in Nebraska, Higginson traveled a lot in her college days, and she fell in love with Paris, Eastern Europe, and Sri Lanka’s beaches. She also developed a liking for Indian food. After years of exploring foreign lands, Higginson decided to come back to Nebraska and settle with her high school sweetheart. She enjoys writing her stories as she raises their five children.
The Opposite of You
The Opposite of You comes first in the Opposites Attract series. This book introduces Vera Delane, a young woman trying to rebuild her life after surviving an abusive relationship. After about three years of sleeping in cheap hotels and hostels in Europe, Vera is now back home with a new business in mind. She is looking to invest in a food truck and cater to the drunk crowd at night. Her family is happy for her, and with the help of her father and brother, Vera’s new business is set up in no time. Vera’s brother Vann even allows her to park the food truck in his parking lot for free. On the downside is that the parking lot is directly opposite a top-rated restaurant.
Killian Quinn is not happy about the new food truck girl disrupting his business. Being among the most celebrated chefs in the country, Killian has never doubted his abilities to please and maintain his customers. However, the food truck parked across the street is bad for business. After a few angry stares fail to deliver the results he is looking for, Killian decides to confront Vera. However, even this does not bear any fruits. The food truck is clearly there to stay. The more Killian and Vera get to know each other, the more they understand each other. Killian finds Vera’s food delicious, and there is something about her feisty nature that makes him want more of her. Vera also discovers that her view of Killian as obnoxious and arrogant was totally wrong.
While Killian and Vera start as enemies, they soon become friends and, in the end, develop feelings for each other. Killian turns into just what Vera needed to boost her self esteem and believe in herself again. The notes critiquing Vera’s food are not always positive, but they help her build her confidence in her abilities. It is also adorable how he doesn’t shy away from sharing his feelings with Vera. This odd couple will have you rooting for them from the beginning. Sure, there is some animosity in the first chapters, but there is no denying the chemistry between them. The fact that they both love everything food is a plus, and it is only a matter of time before Killian and Vera see how much they have in common.
The Opposite of You is perfect if you are in the mood for a cozy and sweet love story. Killian and Vera’s love story is so simple, but it is fireworks once things pick up. The pacing for this story is just right, and the character-building is outstanding. Another thing you will love about it is the food. The author knows a lot about food and will have you starving by the time you get to the last page.
Reckless Magic
Reckless Magic comes first in the Star-Crossed series. The book introduces Eden Matthews, a 16-year-old girl who is having a hard time until she discovers her real identity. Eden is a witch, but she doesn’t know it. While bizarre things keep on happening around her, she cannot tell what they are all about. However, she has been in trouble because of these happenings and is already on her third school after being expelled from two private schools. Kingsley seems to be her final shot at high school, and Eden hopes that everything goes on well. Will this girl’s wish of having a drama-free time at school come true?
On her first day in Kingsley, Eden meets Kiran Kendrick, a newcomer just like her and the new cause of her misery. Kiran will not leave Eden alone, and his presence seems to trigger Eden’s magic more than usual. It doesn’t take long for Eden to figure out that Kingsley is no ordinary school. The students here are experts in magic, and they had been waiting for Eden’s kind of magic for the longest time. Finally, this young lady is in a place where she is accepted, appreciated, and understood. However, Eden realizes the dangers that come with her magic. Evil men are hunting her, and Eden is caught up in an ancient war she knows little about.
This is an intricate story of adventure, mystery, and magic. The heroine, Eden, is likable, and you will be rooting for her from the start. It is breathtakinghow she stands up for those she loves and doesn’t shy away from a challenge. Kiran is not bad as well. Even though his intentions are questionable, it is only through Kiran that Eden learns about her magic and place in the magic world. Higginson is a talented storyteller, and this book is beautifully written. She cleverly draws you in and keeps you so captivated you will not want to put the book down once you start reading.
Reckless Magic is a great start to the series. The character development and world-building are outstanding, and the pacing remains consistent throughout. You will also love meeting Eden, the teenager who wants nothing but to fit in, Kiran the Prince who lives by his own rules, and Eden’s twin brother Avalon. The cast will keep you intrigued from the first chapter to the last one, and it is fun following Eden and Kiran throughout their adventures. If you rate your books by the way they make you feel, you will love this one. The book is written in first person’s view, and the Romeo and Juliet vibe will have you charmed from the start.
