“Please Don’t Tell My Parents” is a series of novels by Richard Roberts a young adult, fantasy and science fiction author. Roberts has been writing for a long time and remembers writing his stories on dirt as a child. But while writing on the dirt was easy, publishing was not and it took years before he got a publisher to look at some of his work. He now publishes all of his young adult and science fiction with Curiosity Quills. As a writer, Richard has always held a fascination for children’s literature, particularly any which tended towards young adult literature. He would later go on to write young adult tragic novels for passion and gothic light romances for fun. He loves to see the world through the eyes of persons that may not conform to the general social norms, which is why some of his friends love to call him Frankensteinbeck. He has also written several free-standing novels and the series “The Doll House.”
The Please Don’t Tell My Parents is a young adult series about a girl named Penelope and her two friends Ray and Claire that together make up the group the Inscrutable Machine. The series of novels is set in a world where superheroes and supervillains are common and in fact, exist as a normal thing. While they are normal middle school students Penny has always wanted to have either the super analytical skills of her mother that include dangerous and glorious strength or the super brain of her father. She finally does get her superpowers and becomes a powerful scientist who can invent almost anything she envisages. She is excited to finally become one of the superheroes but soon after a twist of fate makes the world believe she is a supervillain. Thankfully, Penny assisted by her friends makes for a really great supervillain. The series of novels is not only for middle schoolers as it also has some young adult elements. They tell their stories from a funny sharp and wry voice that makes for some intriguing narratives. Unlike some novels with violence such as the Harry Potter series, Penny never has to fight her classmates, beat the boss level or defeat an evil wizard. Penny is just a supervillain who lives in a realistic world and has her Inscrutable Machine gang composed of her best friends for support just like any other young adult out there.
In “Please Don’t Tell My Parents I’m a Supervillain” the first novel of the Please Don’t Tell My Parents series, we are introduced to a world in which supervillains and superheroes are an accepted and common part of life. It is not uncommon for people to get into public transport and ride with people wearing supervillain dress. The lead in the novel is Penelope who goes by Penny, the daughter of two superheroes that cannot wait to become a superhero herself. When she finally gets her powers, she becomes a Mad Scientist that can invent and come up with all manner of solutions. She will be considering a problem and then get into some type of trance, where she comes up with high tech gadget that is the solution to the problem. Given their experience, her parents believe it will be years before she can have her powers fully developed and under control. Penny thinks otherwise and goes on to come up with a serum that accelerates her development and that of her two best friends. The friends then go on an ill-advised quest to punish some student that was cheating at the science fair. But things go awry and they end up looking like supervillains. In an instant, everyone knows them as the supervillains and nothing they can do or say will convince people otherwise. Stuck with their new identity, they think that they just as well make the most of it and have fun while looking for an opportunity to prove themselves superheroes.
In “Please Don’t Tell My Parents I Blew Up The Moon,” Penny and her friends Claire and Ray spend some time in space, which makes the novels more of a space adventure rather than a supervillain comic book. At the start of the story, the three friends are in school, where they indulge in occasional supervillain acts while waiting for an opportunity to go back to being superheroes. But they are increasingly loving villainy and they may just never get the opportunity to rectify their reputations. Since there are so few teenage supervillains in the Los Angeles area, their super genius parents remain largely unaware that the Inscrutable Machine villains are their daughters. Given their exploits as supervillains they are soon summoned by the supervillain mastermind the Giant Spider. Spider wants to retrieve some high-value alien artifact and convinces the three to go into space to get it for him. What they discover in space are several human colonies on Jupiter’s moons that have been inhabited for hundreds of years. The inhabitants had used Victorian Mad Science and supervillain powers of the Edwardian era to settle the moons. Still, they had to fight and are still fighting several alien races that include the Conquerors and the Puppeteers.
“Please Don’t Tell My Parents I’ve Got Henchmen” the third novel of the Please Don’t Tell My Parents Series has Penny and her friends back in Los Angeles where her zany adventures continue. Penny still wants to be a superhero badly but getting rid of her supervillain reputation is not going to be easy. In the meantime, she has taken charge of their newly expanded club made up of kids from parents with superpowers. All the kids have their own superpowers and are eager to practice and for some reason everyone seems to want a duel against Penny though this has been expressly forbidden by their parents. She has so much on her hands in addition to running the Inscrutable Machine alongside the club, her friendship with Claire and relationship with Ray. Penny thought living a double life was difficult until she suddenly had to juggle so many things all at once. It is especially hard to do particularly for the things she needs to keep under wraps or risk losing everything. But it is the taking up of these tasks that helps her grow alongside her friends Ray and Claire, though it alters their relationship to a degree. While the novel did not have the wild rollercoaster ride of the second novel, it has a lot of life-altering but fun moments, including the challenges of growing up with superpowers.
