Natasha Preston is a British author who has lived most of her life in the small hamlets and villages of the English countryside. Growing up, many people loved to call her Tash or Tasha and the name stuck through to her adulthood. She writes young adult fiction, romance and thrillers spread over several series including “Silence”, “The Cellar” and several freestanding novels. She is married to Joseph, a man whose patience, help, and love she claims is the reason she is the author she is today. She has two children form her marriage to Joseph. Unlike many authors, Natasha did not grow up as a serial book reader as she drifted through school often achieving average grades. After school, she found herself doing mind-numbing receptionist and administration jobs as there was nothing else she was qualified for.
It was in 2010 that she accidentally stumbled into writing. She was looking for an app in the App Store when an amateur writing site named Wattpad caught her eye. She had at last found something to do during her free time and for a few months lost herself reading stories from numerous little known authors. During this time an idea to put some of her own stories that had been forming in her head. Natasha who had previously only read school books and famously has few mentors if any became hooked once she started writing. She published “Silence” her first novel in the “Silence” series of novels in 2012 and has never looked back since. She credits Wattpad for opening her eyes to what was possible by giving her an escape from her mundane life ,and then providing the confidence to dive into the world of authorship.
Natasha Preston debuted her writing career with “Silence”, which was later made into a series by the same name. The leads in the series are Cole and Oakley, both of whom tell the story from their own perspectives making for an interesting narration style. Oakley is a brave, smart, and strong girl who has undergone some of the most traumatic of events during her childhood. However, over the course of the series, she grows as she fights her abuser and tries to find justice. Cole is a likable and fun person that loves Oakley and is afraid of ever losing her as he believes she is his soul mate. Another secondary character in the novels is Jasper who is brother to Oakley, that is similar in temperament to her boyfrind and is also very protective of Oakley. The young adult novel is set in the modern era that it mentions several pop stars in the stories such as Justin Bieber and One Direction. Starting out in Australia the novel eventually moves the setting to the UK for the trials of Oakley’s abuser. The novels take a formal and more often intimate feel as the story moves from Court to Aunt Ali’s Place to Cole’s Parents house and Cole’s apartment. The overriding theme of the novels is that tragedies and hard times are the lot of every human. They assert that the best thing to do is to face up to them and be brave even when they suck you dry.
“Silence” the first novel of the series is a bittersweet narrative of a girl that does her best to conceal a life changing secret whose exposure would likely tear apart her family. The traumatic event had robbed her and her family of an important thing – her voice. Ever since she was five she has never uttered a word, and she is now turning fifteen which makes a decade of silence. She is friends with a boy named Cole that has always been by her side for most of the past decade. Cole understands her better, sometimes even better that she understands herself. Over the years, the two have become inseparable spending their days in each other’s houses and going to school together. Cole is currently seventeen years old and is about to graduate from high school. He wants Oakley involved in everything he does even though she is a junior. They can often be found cutting school, eating lunches, and going to Oakley’s friends’ parties where Oakley can never be found going alone. Over time, their relationship goes from the simply platonic to a romantic one. One of the best things about the novel “Silence” is that it provides a dual perspective as the relationship between the two develops and blossoms to girlfriend and boyfriend.
“Broken Silence” the second novel in the series continues the story of Oakley as she finally gets the courage to face up to her traumatic experience. She had left England for Australia four years past and is back in England to testify about the abuse she had endured at the hands of her father. Cole had been upset when she had left and now she has to face him again, even as he never stopped loving her. Oakley is quite grown up and is nearly turning twenty. She is brave and bold and is trying her best to live a normal life again by putting the past behind her. Her agreeing to testify against her father is a horrible reliving of her experience as a child, which must have been very traumatic. She maintains her calm and fights the good fight to ensure justice for her father. Jasper makes quite a showing, expressing his protective and caring side to Oakley that makes him the coolest brother ever. As for Cole, he comes into his own maybe because he is now a more mature person at twenty-two. He is cute with his blue eyes, smart, and protective of Oakley and will do anything for her. He is what any girl would call boyfriend material or if they were a little bit older maybe even husband type. He is not one shy to express his displeasure and protect Oakley from anyone that would upset or bully her, particularly during this very trying period of her life. The novel is a heartfelt story of love, boldness, and courage in the face of tragedy and life changing events, that is jam packed with excellent story telling from the first page to the last.
