A British writer for a number of years now, the novelist Margaret Duffy has been writing for quite some time now. With a variety of different interests, such as garden designing, she is a highly versatile voice within the literary industry. Focusing on mysteries and thrillers, she also has a gift for writing crime as well, with a highly accurate an in-depth portrayal of the lifestyle.

Early and Personal Life

Born on the first of January in 1942, the future author to be Margaret Duffy was born and raised in the area of Woodford, Essex, in the United Kingdom. Growing up with a keen passion for the written word, she would come to harness her skills as a writer throughout the years. This would allow her to hone her voice as a writer with a strong and articulate style of writing shaped by her many experiences growing up.

Educated to a high standard, she would always have plenty of stories to tell, especially given her family history. From a young age her grandfather would tell her stories of his time in Czechoslovakia during the second world war and afterwards with the dawn of Communism there. This would all seep in allowing her to gain a greater insight into history and the past, allowing her to understand where she came from as a person and writer.

Working in the civil service for some time prior to becoming a writer, she would spend a period of her life at the Inland Revenue. She then went on to work for the Ministry of Defence in Bath, England, a place which would inform much of her writing to follow as well. All the while she would continue to write, building her style and her tone as an author, creating the foundations of her career that was to soon follow.

Still writing to this very day, she continues to put out work at a regular pace, all whilst maintaining a presence on the literary scene. Currently living in Devon upon the edge of Dartmoor in the United Kingdom, she now writes full-time as a fully fledged author. Not showing signs of stopping anytime soon either, this is something that’s expected to continue on into the foreseeable future for some time yet.

Writing Career

Bringing out her first book back in 1987, Margaret Duffy made her debut onto the literary scene with the novel ‘A Murder of Crows’. This was also to be the first in the ongoing series of ‘Ingrid Langley and Patrick Gillard Mystery’ novels, setting up a long-running franchise in the process. It would also help establish her career as a writer, allowing her to develop her style as an author throughout the following years.

Not just writing the ‘Ingrid Langley and Patrick Gillard Mystery’ franchise of novels, she also wrote the ‘Joanna McKenzie’ series. With a clear eye for engaging and enthralling narratives, she has been able to combine character and plot in equal measure. Following her protagonists as well, she has developed them in-depth, allowing her readers to also gain a sense of familiarity with them.

Garnering critical acclaim too, she has also gained praise from both her many peers and contemporaries alike. Gaining commercial success as well as critical, she has also achieved a sizeable audience worldwide as well. Brought out in 2007 on the 1st of October through the ‘Severn House Publishers’ publishing label, this was part of a franchise. This was to be the eleventh title in the ongoing ‘Ingrid Langley and Patrick Gillard Mystery’ series of novels. Providing another investigation for the eponymous duo, it sees them working together once again in order to get to the bottom of the case.

Following the suspicious death of a DCI, it is up to Ingrid Langley, British agent and novelist, and Patrick Gillard, a major in the British army, to solve the case. Previously investigating the murder of Jason Giddings, an MP, the DCI was believed to have gotten himself into some hot water by his superiors. That’s when DS Erin Melrose attempts to find the murderers, and it is up to Langley and Gillard to see that she doesn’t come to any harm. Will they find out the real killers? Can they keep Erin safe? How will they escape the cobweb?

Music In The Blood

Brought out in 1998 on the first of March this was to be the third title in the ongoing ‘Joanna McKenzie series of novels. Continuing in much the same vein as that of the previous novels, it tells of its lead protagonist as she works as a CID who has turned private investigator in Bath, England. Giving further insight into her character, it allows her to not only develop her as a person, but the world she inhabits too.

With her whole life ahead of her, the beautiful and talented young singer Kimberley Devlin seems to have everything. That’s when she is ruthlessly driven off the road by an unseen assailant and her career as an opera singer is brutally cut short. Stepping onto the scene is one Joanna McKenzie, as she must solve the case and find out who it was that wanted her dead. Will she find the killer? Can she stop them from striking again? Why were they so angered by music in the blood?
