To Love and to Cherish

The novel begins with Emma Shirack’s father and mother light automobile being hit by neighbor’s truck, Mr. Cramer. The witnesses to this horrifying accidents are Emma’s sister, Katherine, and her brother Luke who saw their parents being thrown out of their buggy and dying right before them.

With the death of their parents, life changed for the worst, they almost lost their farm, and they had no one to care for them. Luke, Emma’s elder brother, and his family sold his property and moved in with his siblings.

Emma’s was already heartbroken and not fully healed from her past. Her boyfriend, Carl Freiling had deserted the Amish community of Bliss Creek 4 years earlier, and she had no proper information as to why he had left. Since then she vowed that no one would ever break her heart and that she would never date again. Thomas Brennaman was the man who was interested in dating her after his wife died four years ago from cancer. He wanted to date her, but the problems were that he always had trouble in expressing himself and thus all that Emma saw in him was a good friend.

Now Carl, the boyfriend who abandoned her returns and begs Emma to give him a second chance. Moreover, fearing he would lose in the game of love, Thomas, at last, decided to express his feelings to Emma. The entire novel is all about to terms with what her former boyfriend Carl did to her and whom she decides to date in this game of love.

To Love and to Cherish is a well written; the baseline of the story is heartbreaking with the first few pages of the novel dealing with the death of the protagonist character. It is a story of forgiveness and family relations. The characters are so real, for instance, Emma emotions are so touching and real such that you can relate to real life people.

She is dealing with the death of her parents and forgiving the man responsible is no easy task for her. The author did a splendid job, of enabling the characters to express their feelings in a way that connects with the readers. The romance part of the novel read very well, starting from Thomas to Carl.
