K.J Emrick real name Katherine Emrick is an Australian author best known for the writing of cozy mysteries that include the likes of Darcy Sweet, Pine Lake Inn, Lloyd Sisters Trilogy, and Tempest Beach Mysteries among others. Her most popular series is the Darcy Sweet Cozy mystery series that has more than twenty titles. Emrick had always wanted to become an author since she was a child. However, the dream of becoming a published author did not come easy as it was not until she was 51-years old that she managed to get anything published through the Kindle platform on Amazon. Many of her stories draw from her observations and experiences in life to make for some interesting narratives and characters.
K.J. Emrick has always enjoyed making up stories since grade school and would often be found writing down small fairy tale narratives that she would read to her mother. As a teen and during her early teens she spent much of her time reading romances, particularly the Mills and Boon series of novels. Nonetheless, she did not just read anything as she has a select few authors whose work she always read for their flow. For these authors, she read every book they had and every new book they published. As she grew older she pivoted from the romantic and started reading more mystery writers. Among her favorite writers include the likes of James Patterson, Dick Francis, and Agatha Christie. She would also add in Nora Roberts who she asserts is one of the best at combining suspense and romance. Her reading of the incredible mysteries reignited her dream to become a published authors and she was determined to do the same.
Years later and now a published author herself, K.J. Emrick still loves some of her favorite characters from her early adulthood years such as Miss Marple of St Mary Mead written by Agatha Christie. She still finds herself going back to novels such as Women’s Murder Club by James Patterson and most of the works by Agatha Christie. Emrick currently lives in Australia with her family and a variety of pets. She is so given to her writing that she can be found almost anywhere with a journal in which she takes down notes throughout her day. Similar to many of her contemporaries, she loves to read and has a massive library filled with all manner of novels. When she is not writing or researching her novels she loves to volunteer at the local library or spend time with her family. Emrick lives to produce noteworthy and entertaining novels and to participate in a community of writers and readers. Her favorite thing about writing is that it makes it possible for her to disappear into a totally new universe where she can create and mold her settings as she deems fit. It’s usually an exhilarating feeling for Emrick to write about complex and intriguing characters in her many novel series.
The Sweet Darcy series of novels are about Darcy a girl that lives in an unnamed northern state where her aunt left her the sole heir to a bookstore and house, haunted by the aunt’s ghost. Her sister is a police detective named Grace that also lives in the same town with her husband. Together the three often work on mysterious cases that often involve the bookstore, the house, their friends and other members of the small community. Darcy the lead likes to believe that she is just an ordinary girl who owns a bookstore. But she is not an ordinary girly girl as she loves to dress up in a comfortable pair of sneakers, a t shirts, a well-worn pair of jeans, and almost never puts on makeup. However, despite her non girly behavior and appearances she also has the usual romantic encounters even as she finds them most awkward. In most instances, such romantic liaisons often lead to a mysterious case that she will usually take back to Grace and her husband which they will then try to resolve. Darcy Sweet’s connection to the paranormal is often the catalyst for her to be drawn into many mysterious situations. Oftentimes she will rely upon a set of clues from the other side to successfully resolve her mysteries. Combining the ghost of her eccentric aunt and a slightly psychic and naughty cat makes for an explosive combination of interesting reads.
“Death Comes to Town” the first novel of the Darcy Sweet Mysteries opens to the murder of Darcy’s neighbor. She inadvertently finds herself drawn into the investigation when she stumbles into the body. She does all she can to leave the case to the police, but a slight nudge and an overheard conversation and she is back in the thick of it. Things become even more interesting when there is a second murder that strikes closer to home leaving her in a state of panic. Her life is going to get even more interesting when she finds herself irresistibly drawn to Grace her sister’s swoon worthy detective partner. Sparks of tension fly between the two, particularly when the man asserts that he does not like that she as a civilian is meddling in police investigations. The small town is crawling with suspects but working out what pieces of the puzzle fit is proving more complicated than she thought it would be. But when Darcy receives a death threat things suddenly become dangerous and complicated.
In “Mists of the Past” the second novel of the series, Darcy is on a date when she gets a vision from the other side. Daydreaming on a date is bad enough but even worse when one gets a vision about one’s new boyfriend. It is not a vision that paints him in a good light. The man is a cop but that does not mean that Darcy can trust him completely particularly given the vision she has had. She excuses herself and abandons the date through the rear exit of the restaurant, only to find the boyfriend followed her home. She feigns sickness as the reason for her abrupt departure, but she can see that the man is not buying it. The more important thing for her is to dissect her vision and try to find an explanation for it even as she avoids her boyfriend, who will not leave her alone. But the more she learns about him, the more she thinks that he just might be a killer and not the good guy he has portrayed himself to be.
