American author Janet Ellen Morris is well-known for her science-fiction and fantasy novels, taking her readers on a journey. Not only that but she’s also made a name for herself as a defense analyst, authoring non-lethal weapons as a concept for the US military. She’s also written historical novels in the past too, making her a more than versatile author with something important to say. Hugely imaginative, she creates rich and expansive worlds, really allowing the reader to explore and get lost in them fully.

Creating many different series, too, she keeps the reader coming back for more, as her worlds continue to grow. Taking genre fiction in new and exciting directions, she really understands where she’s taking her writing, as she says what she wants to say. Delivering on every single level, she crafts effective narratives that really elevate her audience, allowing them to relate to her work as well. Transporting her readers, she also provides a clear message through her writing, offering something deeper in the process.

The characters Morris creates really do come alive on the page as well, making for some highly effective protagonists. Early and Personal Life

Born in 1946 on the 25th of May, Janet Ellen Morris would grow up with a keen interest in literature, reading and writing from an early age. This passion of hers would develop throughout her life alongside various other pursuits and interests as time went on. Horses would also take precedence, with her and her husband breeding Thoroughbreds between 2003 and 2013.

As horsewoman for all her life, she’s also gone on to establish a breeding program for the Morgan Horse, which she began in 1996. Working in the academic field, too, she’s assisted the military in authoring non-lethal weapons programs, investigating technologies such as infrasound. Married to fellow author Chris Morris, she continues to write to this very day, with a lot more to come still yet.

Writing Career

Beginning her literary career in 1976, Janet Morris would start with the fantasy novel ‘High Couch of Silistra,’ which would come out in 1977. Writing with her husband Chris Morris on many occasion, they would produce a large number of books together over the years. She’s also contributed various short stories to the series of others, including the shared fantasy world, ‘Thieves’ World.’

Publishing non-fiction too, she’s also releasing a biographical title based on the life of the ancient Hittite King Suppiluliuma. She also contributed to many different pieces on the military, making a name for herself as an academic as well as genre fiction novelist. Continuing to find readers around the world, more and more discover her work every day, as she will carry on writing for some time yet.

Beyond the Veil

First arriving in 1986, this would be the second book in the ongoing ‘Beyond Series’ of novels, providing the next part of the long-running fantasy saga. It continues on from the previous book, ‘Beyond Sanctuary,’ released in 1985 the previous year, and paves the way for ‘Beyond Wizardwall’ published 1986 as well. The books themselves are all best read in order so as to get the most from them, and this one comes out through the ‘Ace’ publishing outlet.

Tempus leads his stepsons on a journey that heads into the dark heart of evil, as he attempts to deal with Roxanne and her unholy magical alliance with her tame demons. Taking place in the city of Tyse, the with-plagued city will be the battle-ground for something darker and even more deadly than Sanctuary. Facing the terrifying unknown that lies beyond Wizardwell, heroes are required to face this horrific danger if they wish to be welcomed. Will they overcome this dangerous foe before them, can they survive and emerge victorious, and what exactly lies beyond the veil?

As the second part in an ongoing story, this really works with its expert example of world-building, making for a more than engaging fantasy novel. All of the elements really come into place, as it’s definitely one for not just fans of the author, but of the fantasy genre as a whole. There’s so much to enjoy here, that the reader will easily lose themselves within its richly woven narrative that is compelling on every level.

Dream Dancer

Initially released through the ‘Perseid Press’ publishing imprint, this would first come out in 1980 to much acclaim. Setting up the ‘Kerrion Empire’ series of science-fiction novels, it would pave the way for more to follow, with ‘Cruiser Dreams’ coming out the following year. It’s best that the novels are read in order, as they all feature the ongoing story of Shebat and her place within the Kerrion Empire.

Brought to the Kerrion family’s vast galactic empire from Earth, Shebat is a remarkable girl transported there by their renegade son. She’s then named ruler on a whim by the autocratic father, before being abducted and taken to the slums where she finds the Kerrion’s enslaved who are drugging themselves. Moving among the powerful, Shebat is a powerful seductress, carefully positioning herself in her quest for power and glory. Will she manage to achieve her ultimate goal, can she find her way in this new world, and what will become of the Dream Dancer?

This book draws from a whole range of different influences, from Star Wars to Dune, with its epic sense of scope and scale. Providing an adventure story at the heart of it, Morris builds upon its simple premise with countless engaging and effective ideas. Paving the way for more books to follow, it really does offer a lot for those passionate about science-fiction as a genre.
