A series that Mayer has come to particularly well known for is that of her ongoing ‘Heroes for Hire’ collection of novels. Featuring both romance and suspense, they manage to draw from all the traditional tropes of the genre, whilst taking it in a new direction in the process. Featuring strong lead characters, it tells a new story each and every time, as it follows the Navy SEALs and their rich and exotic love lives. The characters themselves, whilst they do follow many of the staples of the genre, manage not to fall into broad stereotypes, as they come alive forming into fully realized three-dimensional personalities. Continually being added to and reinvented, Dale Mayer manages to bring this series to life with wit, intelligence and good humor.

First published in 2017, this series started off with the novel ‘Levi’s Legend’, as it introduced both the world and the concept. Running for a total of seventeen books and counting since then, it’s managed to incorporate a whole range of different themes and elements during the course of its entire run. Whilst there may be loose thematic arcs and ideas between the novels, each title stands on their own, with the series being easy to pick up at any point throughout. With a lot more to follow, many readers are continuing to discover the Mayer, something that will carry on for a long time to come.

Levi’s Legend

Originally published through the Valley Publishing Ltd. imprint, this was first brought out on the 8th of March in 2017. Effectively a reprint, this was to be the first title in the Heroes for Hire series, setting it up, as it would establish the central premise and tone. Giving its own singular story, it would also manage to provide a great casual read too, thanks to its easy accessibility and easy style.

Establishing many of the core themes and ideas of the series, this really manages to set the overall tone of the franchise. Following the formula of the contemporary romance novel, it also manages to take some inventive detours of its own along the way. With fun and exciting characters, it really is an interesting and engaging read for both fans of the author and newcomers alike.

Setting out to find and take down the men that betrayed him, Levi has a plan of vengeance on his mind, as he seeks retribution. One issue though, is that the final man on his list is looking to do the same, with the express aim of taking down Levi and ending it once and for all. Having been with him for every step of the way, Ice has stood by his side through thick and thin, but there’s still been a few points where she hasn’t, which has made it extremely hard for her. Now, with this new threat underway, they must work together if they ever hope to deal with this deadly threat that faces them. Can they manage it? Will their relationship survive through this trying ordeal? What will become of them as they create Levi’s legend?

Stone’s Surrender

Once again published through the Valley Publishing Ltd. publishing house, this would provide another instalment in the long-running ‘Heroes for Hire’ franchise. Following on from the last, it was initially brought out on the 14th of March in 2017, carrying on in much the same vein as before. With plot elements brought over from the original, it works as an entirely stand-alone romance novel, allowing the more casual reader of the series to pick it up as well.

Working at Levi’s company now, Stone finds himself all set on a mission to rescue the daughter of a senator out in the middle east. Finding Lissa there, the daughter, chemistry soon flies between them, as she finds herself falling deeply for Stone. Not just that, but she has other plans besides what her father has set out for her, but, after returning home, she finds that some of the nightmare has followed her back. What follows is a battle to help clear her name, as the two of them must work together to prove her innocence against all the odds. Will they manage it and survive through this ordeal? Can they ever hope to become an item? What will become of Stone’s surrender?

The Heroes for Hire Series

In such an abundant genre, it is a testament to Mayer’s talent as an author that she’s managed to elevate this series into something else. Whilst it does provide escapism for the more casual reader, with a collection of fun and breezy reads, she manages to offer something more in-depth underneath it all. This has lead to her characters resonating on an even deeper level, as they provide an insight into the psychology of modern relationships. Using the premise of military men as its central premise, it builds upon this with a number of themes and ideas of increasing complexity surrounding this. With a lot more room to continue growing, this is a series that doesn’t appear to be finishing any time soon either, as there’s definitely a lot more to come yet.

A writer of contemporary romance novels, along with paranormal fiction as well, Canadian author Dale Mayer has been writing for a number of years now. Known for her highly distinctive and idiosyncratic voice, she is a well established voice and presence on the literary scene. Creative and confident, she knows her audience and her market extremely well, as she understands exactly what it is that she wants to say. One such series is that of her ongoing ‘Heroes For Hire’ collection of novels which follows the romantic lives of men serving in the armed forces. Working as an offshoot spin-off series of novels to the well regarded ‘SEALs Of Honor’ franchise, this is set in the same universe. Bringing in many recurring characters, it uses a lot of the same themes and ideas as that series, allowing it to build and develop.

Totaling nine titles so far and counting, this is a spin-off series that very much lives up to the previous work of Dale Mayer as an author. Each book is considered as a title that is firmly ‘A SEALs of Honor World Novel’, that being where they stand in her overall backlog of work. Living up to the premise, she doesn’t fail to deliver either, as they each work on their own as stand-alone titles, as well as offering a more finely developed universe as a whole.

Rhodes’ Reward

Brought out through the ‘Valley Publishing Limited’ publishing label, this was set to be the fourth title in the ongoing ‘Heroes for Hire’ series. Providing another stand-alone edition that’s set in the same universe as the previous novels, it’s a great addition to the overall franchise. Not only that, but it also provides unique and distinctive characters all of its very own, ones which resonate with the readers.

Featuring many of the themes and ideas that are typically associated with contemporary romance, this provides its own unique spin on the genre. Relating universal ideas and narratives, it appeals to a large audience, with it reaching readers from all corners of the globe. With characters and situations that are easy to relate to, along with also providing a sense of escapism, Mayer allows her readers to live vicariously through the protagonist. The characters themselves are extremely well drawn, providing the ideal gateway in to this enticing and exciting world that Mayer has created. With the female lead Sienna she is a strong and independent character who is assertive and confident, having grown out of being slightly awkward and geeky. The main love interest himself though, is that of Rhodes who is a strong and resourceful individual himself, and the perfect foil for Sienna. Set in a series of exotic locations as well, it manages to convey a sense of excitement and danger too, as it essentially transports the reader to far-off destinations. Knowing and understanding her story well, Mayer is able to perfectly visualize the settings through her vivid and highly detailed descriptions. Allowing the reader to dive right in, the locations almost become characters in of themselves, as they are integral to not only the narrative, but the style as well.

Knowing her since she was young and ever so slightly gawky, Rhodes had always been close to Sienna. Now fully grown up, she always had something special about her, and she’s always had an eye for her brother’s best friend Rhodes. Now she has been asked to help out on a job, something which could get the both of them into a whole lot of trouble. Will they both live to see another day? Can they ever live happily ever after? What will become Rhodes’ reward?

Harrison’s Heart

Released once again through the ‘Valley Publishing Limited’ label, this was set to be the seventh title in the ongoing ‘Heroes for Hire’ series. Originally brought out on the 11th of July in 2017, this provides another adventure and romance in much the same vein as the previous titles. With some surprises and twists of its own though, it manages to develop the series overall, taking it in a new and interesting direction.

With a lot of similar ideas to the previous novels in the series, this will be familiar territory for many of Mayer’s more regular readers. Following the common tropes and themes of contemporary romance, this manages to once again take it on its own unique path. This allows it to stand out from the rest of the franchise, giving it a sense of character, something which is reflected in the story itself. Featuring a different coupling this time, many of the characters themselves are also fairly similar to the previous novels, but different enough in their own way to stand-out from the rest. Harrison is the leading male protagonist who takes charge in his own inimitable way, dealing with his own personal demons, trying to always do the right thing. Zoe on the other hand is also always striving to get things done, being a highly ambitious and extremely driven individual throughout the course of the novel. With a wide sense of scale and breadth again too, this also takes place in a variety of different locations akin to the previous books.

After the shooting of a senator it is down to Harrison to step-up following a call from the father of Ice. With the wife of the senator having been beaten, along with their kids being left feeling lost, Harrison really has his work cut out for him. Then there is Zoe who is on her own mission, as she looks to escape dark forces that seek to put an end to her apparent meddling. Can they help each other? Is there hope in restoring order? What will become of Harrison’s heart?

Delivering what only she does best, it combines characters that resonate with engaging and witty stories that are accessible as they are entertaining. With more titles set to follow in the future, this looks set to be a series that will continue for some time to come, as it continues to grow from strength-to-strength.
