Haruichi Furudate is a very well-known and popular Manga artist who made his name with the “Haikyu” series. The comic artist and author was born in Iwate Prefecture, Japan in 1983. Even though he is one of the most popular Manga creators in the world there is very little known about him, particularly in the Western world.
Furudate spent much of his childhood in Iwate Prefecture but after he graduated from high school, he spent nearly ten years in Miyagi Prefecture. Some of the locations where he used to live as a child and young adult would become the inspiration for his most famous volleyball anime.
For the most part, he set the show in Miyagi since he has said that he was not that familiar with Iwate where he was born and spent his childhood as compared to the former. Nonetheless, whenever he draws his Manga and includes Kara suno High School as the setting, he has always imagined Iwate as it was during his school-going days.
Even when he was still a kid going to high school, he dreamed of one day becoming a manga artist and used to pen all manner of character notes. Nonetheless, he would not achieve his dream until he was twenty-five.
In 2009, Haruichi Furudate made his debut when “Akamaru Jump” published his first work titled “Playground.” It was in that year that he published “A Ghost of Senior Yotsuyahis One Shot” series. This was the work that would then be serialized in “Weekly Shonen Jump” in 2010 and ran for nearly four volumes.
Following that success, he submitted “One Shot of Haikyu” in 2011 which was published in “Jump Next.” Things started happening for Furudate in 2012 when “Haikyu” got serialized in the “Weekly Shonen Jump” magazine. Over the years, he has published more than 45 volumes which have sold more than 50 million copies.
In 2012, Furudate began working with other manga artists to produce works that would appeal to a crossover audience. One of the most prominent and popular of these collaborative efforts was when he worked with Naoshi Komi otherwise known as Nisekoi to produce a comedy series titled “Nisekyu.”
As for how Haruichi Furudate got into volleyball manga, he has said that he is a former volleyball player and still loves the game. He used to play in junior high and in high school and preferred to play over studying.
While he was in high school, he used to attend school just to attend volleyball club activities and he got into drawing since he wanted to play volleyball. When he was still a student, he was a huge fan of Shigeru Aoyama the director of Chukyo University, and loved players such as Seijo High School’s Taichi Kawaguchi and Yuta Yoneyama.
It is for this reason that he renders the sport with such detailed accuracy while still making it easy to understand and interesting for anime fans who have never played volleyball.
Haruichi Furudate’s novel “Haikyu!! 1” is a work that tells the story of Shoyo Hinata. He has always dreamed of becoming a volleyball player but his junior high school lacks the facility and players.
While playing in the junior tournament, he meets one of the best setters in the game who is very short but somehow beats just about everyone set before him. When he joins Karasuno High School he meets Kageyama, the short exceptional setter who also goes there.
Initially, he clashes with Kageyama and this comes to the attention of the higher-ups at the club. The most prominent members of the volleyball club are Tanaka, Suga, and Daichi the captain, who insists that if Hinata wants to be part of the club they will need to show significant improvements in teamwork.
It is fascinating to see Kageyama, Hinata and Tanaka come together to form a powerful team that includes one of the best spikers and setters in the club.
This is a great manga fiction work that makes you invested in fictional volleyball with how captivating it is. Focusing on the growth of the characters as a team and players and also on the gameplay, it also shows their struggles and those of their opposing players and teams.
“Haikyu!! 2” by Haruichi Furudate is the second work of the “Haikyu” series of novels. The events of this work are set following the 3-on-3 match that Tanaka, Kageyama, and Hinata played against Daichi, Yamaguchi, and Tsukishima.
Hinata has been finding it too hard to beat Tsuki’s block but ultimately, they come up with a plan to combine their attacking skills. By working together, they might just have struck upon a formula that will take Karasuno High School back to being among the best volleyball clubs in the country.
At some point, they are invited to play with one of the four best teams and it is here that Hinata’s friend Kageyama reunites with his middle school teammates and deals with some ghosts from his past.
On the team is Aoba Josai who is senpai to Kageyama, plays Oikawa, and has a reputation for being a very balanced player when it comes to his placements and services. While Karasuno still has a lot of improvements to do, they might just receive a player who can provide the big boost in defense that they need.
The work continues to showcase a story of improvement, friendship, and team play making for an interesting manga fiction work.
Haruichi Furudate’s novel “Haikyu!! 3” is an interesting addition to the “Haikyu” series of novels. At the opening of this work, the interschool championships are on the horizon which means the Karasuno High School Volleyball team needs to concentrate on their training regimen.
Thankfully, they added Asahi and Noya to the team making it more complete. Nonetheless, they still have many areas of improvement which is seen in a match they played against the neighborhood association.
Moreover, they have a new coach who is determined to make them as prepared as they could be when they play Nekoma.
