It was an explosion that happened in the cave system that ended up with the release of unknown gases. The gas had strange side effects on the resident of the sound, like hearing ominous voices or having strange visions.

The citizens didn’t want the government to come in and get involved, so they simply wrote it off as being from mushrooms and their hallucinogenic effects. But they had no idea that the effects that they experienced would continue to linger throughout the generations.
