Choose Your Own Adventure is a gamebook series by different authors. In every book, you will assume a new identity and go on numerous adventures. This series comes with many spinoff series, meaning there are hundreds of Choose Your Own Adventure gamebooks, written and published by different authors. The only thing common thing in these books is that they allow you to choose the path to follow. Each copy offers you more than enough options, and you can try whichever path you think is right for you. The stories start with sufficient information about the adventures and role you are supposed to play, but surprises lurk in every corner.
The Cave of Time
The Cave of Time comes first in the Choose Your Own Adventure series. In this gamebook, you are a kid enjoying a hike in the Snake Canyon. When you come upon a cave you have never seen before; you decide to venture inside only to realize that you are lost in the Cave of Time. The cave is strange and dimly lit, yet you can see passageways in the distance. One of the passageways curves downwards while the one to the left leads upwards. You soon realize that the passageways curving downwards leads you to the past while the upward facing one will take you to the future. Which way do you choose?
In case you choose to go right, jump to page 61. You can also choose the left branch and go to page 20. The other option would be to walk outside and go to page 21 to see what happens next. Whichever way you choose, you must be aware that hungry Tyrannosaurus Rex is hiding in the shadows. It is also likely that you will get lured into an alien spaceship. Whatever happens to you on this adventure is dependent on the choice you make, and with about 40 endings, you can be sure that you will have quite an adventure. So, which path between the past and the future is more exciting?
The beauty of this book is that you can re-read it as many times as you want and enjoy the numerous daring experiences. First published in 1979, this gamebook feels like a walk down memory lane. The pictures are quite exciting and include a swamp monster, the Great Wall of China, and a medieval knight, among other scary creatures. Getting lost in this story, and things get so exciting you cannot wait to see what the next page has to offer. Even though the book is written with children, nine to twelve years in mind, you can be sure you will still enjoy every bit of it as an adult.
The Cave of Time is an excellent start to an entertaining series. There are many laugh-out-moments that children and adults are sure to enjoy. Enjoy taking a trip to the past or seeing what the future has in store for you. You will encounter many adventures on each path, and the beauty of it all is that only you choose how your story ends. The flow here is good despite the numerous options. Every story reads well, and, amazingly, you get to enjoy so many captivating tales in just one book. The illustrations are also captivating and sure to excite all readers, young and old.
Journey Under the Sea
Journey Under the Sea comes second in the Choose Your Own Adventure series. In this book, you are a skilled deep-sea explorer searching for a lost continent known as Atlantis. You decide to embark on a dangerous trip with many unknowns. The only mission here is to find Atlantis. However, you will soon realize that this trip is nothing like you expected. Your courage will be tested, and you will think that you are making a wise move only for things to take a wrong turn. To help you navigate this strange world, you will have new equipment that hasn’t been tried before.
As you start on your adventure, you will learn that the cable connecting the Seeker to ship Maray is at its limit. An ancient myth states that Atlantis is just beyond the ledge close to the canyon. You will have to get to the ocean floor to get to the lost city. Fortunately, you have the experimental diving suit that is supposed to protect you from intense pressure. You also have a choice to cut the Seeker and travel further to see what more you can find. If you want to explore the ledge where the Seeker rests, go to page 6. What do you find? Is it anything that you anticipated?
This intriguing book comes with 42 endings meaning that you can re-read over forty times and get a different finish every time. You will encounter dangerous monsters, die a few times, and even find some Atlanteans. The Atlanteans are different in each encounter, which makes things even more exciting. You will have simplistic adventures where you choose to abandon the adventure, and you will have times when you will enjoy hardcore sci-fi adventures. The fun is in sometimes taking the wrong turn to see what an unexpected path has to offer. All illustrations here are exciting, and the story is so captivating that you will keep wondering what other adventure awaits you on the next page.
Journey Under the Sea is a captivating gamebook that most children will enjoy. Even with all its adventures, the writing in this book is so simple most children will read through it with minimal if any difficulty. It is great how in control you will feel, taking one adventure after another. Even if you end up dead, there is a chance to start all over again and see what the next adventure offers. While this gamebook is designed for young readers, there is a lot for adults to enjoy as well. You can also choose to enjoy the gamebook as a family. You will need a few hours to enjoy all the 117 pages in the book.
