About C.B. Lee

The American writer C.B. Lee is well-known for their intelligent and incisive brand of fiction, reaching readers from all over the world. Making a name for themselves, Lee has a real gift for the written word, pushing the boundaries of of literary fiction in new and interesting directions. Largely writing science-fiction and fantasy, they really understand what it is that actually drives the genres, making them entertaining for all. Taking their many readers on a journey, they have a deep imagination that’s filled with both a real sense of scale of scope.

Over time they’ve essentially created their own style, making themselves a household name for many around the world. Saying precisely what it is that they want to say, they allow their work to ultimately speak for itself, while also simultaneously imparting a message. Working with a few highly regarded franchises as well, they’ve published works set in the ‘Minecraft’ and ‘Star Wars’ worlds. Making their writing accessible to a wide-ranging audience, their work is highly immersive, covering a number of different themes and ideas.

One of the key features to their work is that of their well established characters, developing characters over several different books. Their protagonists have come to make a real impact upon their readers, setting their books apart from other writers within their field. Early and Personal Life

Growing up with a deep passion for literature, they would nurture their craft as a writer from an early age. A Chinese-Vietnamese-American author coming from Los Angeles in California, they would grow up with parents who were immigrants from China an Vietnam. Writing in an open and direct manner, they’d become known for their informative and engaging approach, while also opening up about their own struggles.

Often touring as not only a writer, but also an activist and an educator, they have spoken their mind at numerous different events. Taking inspiration from the world around them, they would put it all back into their work, establishing their own style and tone in the process. Currently residing in Los Angeles, they continue to write regularly and consistently, with a lot more still yet to come.

Writing Career

Publishing pieces in various different outlets, they’ve also been featured in publications such as Hypable, Teen Vogue, and Wired Magazine. Their first novel would be ‘Seven Tears at High Tide,’ and it would be a Young Adult fantasy novel, while also being a stand-alone title. They would later begin their well-known ‘Sidekick Squad’ series with ‘Not Your Sidekick’ in 2016, followed by several other books in the franchise.

Becoming a New York Times bestselling author, they would not only be a hit with the critics, but also become hugely successful commercially as well. Winning awards, they’d receive a ‘Rainbow Award’ back in 2015 for their initial debut, and would also become a ‘Bisexual Book Award’ nominee in 2016. With Thao Le representing them through the ‘Sandra Dijkstra Literary Agency,’ they continue to maintain a profile both offline and on.

Seven Tears at High Tide

Initially published through the ‘Duet’ publishing outlet, this would be the debut literary release for C.B. Lee. Making a name for themselves with this book, it would garner lots of acclaim, being a stand-alone fantasy novel aimed at a Young Adult demographic. Released back in 2015 on the 15th of October, it would establish Lee’s name, making them a definite writer to watch in the years to follow.

Walking to the edge of the ocean holding a broken heart, Kevin Luong allows seven tears to fall into the sea as he wishes for love. Saving a mysterious boy from the Pacific, he soon sees the boy, Morgan, turning up at his door once again professing his love for Kevin. One issue remains though, and that’s that Morgan is a selkie, and he’s being drawn back from the human world and into the sea. How much time does he actually have, can they remain together forever, and what will finally become of the seven tears at high tide?

It’s an interesting and engaging book with a compelling story, and equally compelling characters that really capture the attention. Offering a whole world to explore for the reader, Lee writes in a beautiful and articulate manner, really managing to keep their younger audience invested. There’s so much to offer at the heart of this book, providing fantasy and romance all the way, right until its epic conclusion.

Not Your Backup

Primarily aimed at middle-grade readers, the story combines science-fiction and fantasy, focusing on super-heroes and powers. The third book in the ‘Sidekick Squad’ series of novels, it carries on from the previous titles, with ‘Not Your Villain’ preceding it, and ‘Not Your Hero’ following it. First released in 2019 on the 4th of June, it would be published through the ‘Duet Books’ publishing imprint to much acclaim.

Looking to lead a resistance movement against a corrupt Heroes League of Heroes, Emma Robledo has left school as a high-school senior. Creating a fractured resistance movement, she’s the only member of her team without super-powers, and it’s difficult to be taken seriously. Determined to fight against the League, she must do whatever it takes as a natural leader, taking charge of the group from the front. Does she have what it takes to seize the day, can she put a stop to the nefarious League, and what will happen as she says ‘I’m not your backup?’

This book is another fun inclusion into the overall series, bringing up a whole range of interesting themes and ideas. Making it accessible to younger readers, the book has a lot to offer in the way of a thrilling story, while paving the way for more to follow. Developing the characters and the overall world, it definitely manages to grab the reader from the outset, and not let go right till the very last page.
