Blake Wilder is the main character in a mystery book series by Elle Gray. She is a girl with a dark past that she wants to escape and unleash vengeance against. After her entire family is murdered, she later joins the FBI in the hopes of discovering the truth of the past. The truth, however, won’t come in a silver platter, and hence Blake must be ready for whatever chains of events she sparks.
The 7 She Saw
We rarely get to read a contemporary set mystery and thriller with such strong female characters and an exciting plot. This is the first book about protagonist Blake Wilder, whose father was murdered after testifying against organized crime. Blake has vowed vengeance, but her investigation leads her into danger as she learns about her father’s family history and secrets of the past. Ms. Gray does not disappoint.
Working with the FBI is often pictured as an alluring work demanding lots of sacrifices and some best rewards for anyone involved. But what most of us miss is one aspect of the job that requires a detective to stare into the abyss for the rest of the career. And such is the case of our main character, agent Blake Wilder, whose blackened void in her life is her guiding hand and longtime companion.
Marking the start of the Blake Wilder FBI Mystery series, the story introduces us to the designative agent, a woman whose parents died under mysterious circumstances and whose sister disappeared when she was just a child. She vowed to join the FBI in hopes of piecing together the clues from her mysterious past.
But unfortunately for her, her hopes fade on the horizon as all she can do is work on the cases that come to her desk. And what sparks her curiosity is the series of murders in the small town of Briar Glen.
With the help of her partner Astra, Blake Wilder sets out to the idyllic coastal town, commencing her investigation by revealing the truth behind three female murder victims. While the murder puzzles appear logical at first, the keen FBI agents discover cracks in the locals’ peaceful and quiet pretense.
The closer they come to discovering the epicenter of the murder mystery, the more it becomes clear that no one can be trusted. Monsters in human form make their presence known, and it all starts to feel like the right question to ask- who’s in the local town isn’t guilty?
When writers begin crafting book series, especially series in the psychological thriller category, most of the time, we see them focus less on characterization. Instead, most writers focus on solid archetypes characters who push the story forward than anything else. But that’s not the case with the Blake Wilder series, as Elle Gray places a healthy amount of time to make her main character stand out.
The story is narrated from Blake’s point of view, and through her, we can glimpse at her dark past and the personal struggles she’s had to endure. As a matter of fact, the book starts off relatively slowly, with the first few pages and chapters spent on Blake’s head, and the author manages to keep the reader hooked right from the beginning.
In terms of character creation and narration, it’s evident that Elle Gray is a master in the art of both. She hits the perfect balance between making her central character both capable and believable. While she does have special skills as an FBI agent, she too does have her own limitations and personal problems holding her back. As the story progresses, we learn a lot about herm, and at the same time, the author gives a good amount of room for development in future books.
Her Perfect Crime
Her Perfect Crime is the third book in the Blake Wilder FBI series by Elle Gray, and things keep getting better and better. Blake is still in charge of her FBI teams, and they are following a trail of unsolved cases of theft at the Cash and Go store. The gang is getting more dangerous with each day and is now beating people almost to death.
And just like the old saying- dead men tell no tales, and the unspeakable evil they known remains a mystery buried six feet under.
For Blake and her team, it’s upon her to solve robberies that leave a blood trail of mayhem and murder.
She is too familiar with unsolved cases and still hasn’t been able to figure out the mysteries surrounding the death of her family. However, she’s vowed to put an end to the crime and punish any evil-doer that crosses her path.
In the third book in the series, we meet Blake, who takes on an unsolved case she came across in her early career, which spans over 5 years. But as she and her team of capable FBI agents step deep into the investigation, they unravel another series of shocking crimes claiming the lives of innocent women.
As they dig deeper into their case, the coincidences are too much to bear until the truth cannot be refuted, and Blake discovers that they’ve unraveled something more intricated and puzzling than she had ever imagined. The clock is fast ticking, and Blake must solve these murder cases and make an arrest or else risk losing the thieves and killers once again.
As the primary character races to solve the puzzling case, a note from a person who knew her parents got Blakes’s deadly past hastily catching up with her sooner than she anticipated. There are shadows she is unaware of lurking behind the scenes. Pieces being moved on the playboard, a force so strong and frightening being bought to unleash its wrath on her.
The Blake Wilder FBI series is a unique series focused on primarily female characters from the investigators, the director, to the police force personnel. If you enjoy reading psychological thriller books featuring strong female characters, then it’s highly recommended you grab a copy of this book series.
