Ben Alderson writes beautiful fantasy stories from the point of view of a magical elf that is mysterious, male, and gay. The lead in his novels is Zacriah, a complex and original character unlike any to be found in a young adult novel. The reader goes along on a journey with the character as he tells of his background, his encounters with other elves, his supernatural powers, and his discovery of the working of his world. Ben Alderson is an expert world builder with excellent characterization. Writing of perfect relationships, he creates such a beautiful relationship between Prince Hadrian and Nyah among several other organic and healthy relationships. The characters jump out of the page with their relatable and likable nature that makes the reader become quite attached to them. The author makes his novels a combination of a fantasy, LGBTQ, love, and adventure story all in one. This coupled with all out romance and action makes for some explosive stories full of suspense and tension.

“Cloaked in Shadow” is an astonishingly beautiful novel of “The Dragori” series of novels by Ben Alderson. The lead in the novel is Zacriah Trovirn, a man dealing with a lot of challenges. He lives in a kingdom that is ruled by an elf king with a closet full of skeletons. His prince is in love with an alien shifter that turns out not be a shifter. His friend turns against him making it impossible for him to determine whom he could ever trust as even his magic does not seem to work as intended. But with increasing bloodshed, he knows that he needs to do something to get back his full powers and protect his loved ones. Ben Alderson writes an excellent novel that belies the saying do not judge a book by its cover. Right from its cover, He makes a beautiful cover that will make one fall in love with the lead protagonist Zacriah almost immediately. The cover is a captivating picture of Zacriah in an enigmatic pose with arrow and bow. Zacriah is a man of pure heart who wins big for the gay protagonist in a love story. He lives in a liberal and accepting community of elves where the likes of Hadrian, Petrer, and Zac who are openly gay are readily accepted. It would seem that being gay or queer is a natural thing in this world as judgment and prejudice are almost nonexistent. Petrer the raven shifter is introduced first and is quite the likable character until you meet Prince Hadrian. Hadrian is an enigmatic, dashing and swoon worthy prince who brings another meaning to romance with his sweet, tender, mild, and palpable love.

Zacriah lives for only two things: dodging Petrer and hunting. Petrer is the man that had once destroyed his life by breaking his heart. But heartbreak is the last thing on his mind when he finds himself in Thessaolina the capital of the Elven world. At Thessaolina he is forced to join the shape shifters a new legion under service to King Dalior. But he does not know what he is though everyone thinks he is a shape shifter. Teaming up with friends they soon find themselves fighting a war between the continents. With a bigger war imminent, Zacriah needs to up his skills if he is to protect his loved ones. Combining the Dragori, the magick, the Elementals, and the Elven kingdoms makes for a captivating and enthralling story. It’s an enchanting story of the collision of two worlds. There is never a dull moment in the novel as it combines it adventurous, magical, and high fantasy aspects to make for one of the best young adult fantasy novels ever.

“Prince of Flames” is the prequel to the first novel of The Dragori series of novels. The novel provides deep insights into Prince Hadrian and why he relates with other characters as he does. Some of the most intriguing of stories is the one about his relationship with Fadine, his mother. The novel is set at the beginning of the events of the first novel of the series. It is an excellent primer on the character and personality of Prince Hadrian and gives a background on how much Hadrian was in the loop with regard to unfolding events. If you loved the first novel in the series Cloaked in Shadow then you will love its prequel. It provides a deeper look into Hadrian’s life and other characters that will make the reading of the first novel even more enjoyable.
