Anna Markland
Anna Markland is a Canadian author with a sharp interest in genealogy. She writes medieval romance about roots, honor, and ancestry. Her books are intimate stories of love filled with adventure and passion.
Besides writing, she’s got two addictions: crosswords and genealogy, which probably the reason that she loves research so much. She is also a fool for cats. Her husband is an entrepreneur that is fond of boasting that he’s never had a job.
Anna was born and raised in the United Kingdom and loves breathing life into her homeland’s history. Escape with her to where romance started, and get more intimate with history.
After a successful career in teaching, she transformed her love of history and writing into engaging works of fiction. Before she became a fiction writer, she published many family histories.
When it comes to getting inspired to write, she is lucky to live on the coast and finds walking along the seashore to be very inspirational. The sounds and sights help to unlock her ideas. If she gets faced with some “block” of some kind, she goes for a walk along the beach and returns with some fresh ideas. It is a question of allowing your mind wandering and just letting the thoughts come in.
“Conquering Passion” is the first novel in the “Montbryce Legacy” series and was released in the year 2010. The year is 1066. This introduces us to Antoine, Rambaud, and Hugh de Montbryce, all brothers from a noble Norman family with an illustrious and long military history.
The oldest brother, Ram, is an ambitious warrior that is greedy for power and glory in the service of William the Conqueror, his friend. His heroism at the Battle of Hastings helps securing the Norman victory and earns him the earldom in newly conquered England. Nothing could possibly stand in the way of the man’s ambition. Definitely not love. He knows he’s got an obligation to marry however believes that the woman his dad picked for him is just unsuitable.
Mabelle de Valtesse spent years wandering through Normandy with her exiled dad. His lands finally get restored to him and freedom is close to hand, her dad betroths her to Ram. Together, they struggle to establish any sort of powerful dynasty in this dangerous and medieval world. They share a passion, however can a warrior like Ram, that demands obedience in a wife, find love with this willful refugee that was brought into his bed in an arranged marriage?
They are both drawn to one another physically, however it takes a rather cruel separation to make them truly realize the depth of their mutual love. Wealth and power don’t mean anything if Ram is unable to rescue her from the people that kidnapped her. Can love flourish and survive amid all the hatred, carnage, dangers, and betrayals of the Norman Conquest?
“Defiant Passion” is the first novel in the “Sons of Rhodri” series and was released in the year 2012. Rhodri ap Owain, the Prince Powwydd, is constantly a thorn in all the Norman Marcher lords’ sides. His sorties into the border counties of England from his stronghold in the Welsh mountains leave behind a trail of destruction and fear behind them. He hates Norman and Saxon equally and burns with Celtic fervor for a Wales that is free of their domination.
The mere mention of his name strikes total fear into the hearts of the people that live on the English side of the Welsh border. To them, he’s a feral force. While to his own people he’s a folk hero of mythical proportions. Even though few have ever even met him, all know about his deeds.
Rhonwen Dda is a shy healer, just a diminutive woman of peace that is renowned for her mystical aura. Even though she is drawn to Rhodri, she can’t see any future for them. Rhodri believes that she is his destiny. Is he going to convince her to share his lonely life being the champion of these oppressed people?
This book is enjoyable and well written. Anna delivers an in depth and detailed, not to mention passionate historical romance novel.
“Dark and Bright” is the second novel in the “Sons of Rhodri” series and was released in the year 2012. Rhys ap Rhodri isn’t a warrior, unlike his dad. He believes in diplomacy and negotiation. His rebellious twin brothers get captured and are sentenced to hanged by the Earl of Warwick, he arranges a betrothal that’s going to save both his brothers and land him a wife.
Annalise de Vymont is an impoverished and disgraced Norman baron’s daughter. She’s always dreamed about marrying some handsome chivalrous knight, not some Welsh barbarian all set on dragging her up to his remote castle. To Rhys ap Rhodri, she was just a means to an end, the business transaction that he was obliged to enter into for the sake of his brothers and the need to produce an heir.
“Kilty Secrets” is the first novel in the “Clash of the Tartans” series and was released in the year 2017. Ewan MacKinloch, being the chief’s second son, resents getting offered up as the sacrificial lamb in this marriage set up to end a three hundred year long feud with the MacCarrons.
Ewan trades places with the one-armed clansman hoping that Shona MacCarron is going to refuse to go through with this wedding. However he’s unaware that Shona too traded places with an aunt that’s known as Lady Lazy Eye so she too can avoid the marriage arranged after her dad’s recent death.
Confusion rules the day when alchemy ends up drawing them to one another and they risk helping out the cause of factions that are ambitious to usurp the hereditary MacCarron chieftaincy. Are they going to learn the other’s Kilty Secrets?
Anna’s characters here are meticulously crafted, detailing their strengths along with their weaknesses. She examines their physical and emotional disabilities and how these things are able to effect the characters. The characters change and grow in their inner strength and confidence.
