When she began going to a book club while raising her children, the group suggested that she write about the story that she was telling and turn it into a book. Since her husband had just suggested she write a novel, the idea took hold, and with her husband’s support she tried writing her first book which a publisher bought.

From there Tonya kept on writing. She now has awards, several published novels to her name, a fan base, and an outlet for all of her ideas. She loves meeting readers and talking to them and that she can provide them with a much-needed daily escape, as well as making them laugh.

When it comes to Normal, Kentucky, the town doesn’t exactly live up to the name. The main character in this story is Mae West. While she may share a name with the famed actress, she doesn’t really have that much in common with her namesake. Things are also quickly falling apart for her. She’s been living large in New York, but her lifestyle is about to be turned upside down.

Everything freezes when Mae’s mansion is raided by the FBI. Just like that, her husband Paul has been arrested. The charge is for scamming, allegedly running a Ponzi scheme that worked to cheat people out of their money– in this case, it’s alleged to be millions. Mae suddenly goes from living the high life to being at the bottom of the barrel. Predictably, all of her rich friends want nothing to do with her.

Without money or a home, Mae decides to try and reboot her life. The government failed to take the camp ground Happy Trails and an RV located in Normal, Kentucky. But Mae has not roughed it in a while, and she knows that this camping situation is likely not going to come with the perks she craves.

When she gets to Happy Trails, Mae quickly finds out that the place is nothing like it was on the brochure. The lake is not crystal blue but murky and has green stuff on top of it. Worse, once she arrives there she finds out that Normal’s citizens and the camp ground were affected by Paul’s scams. This means that she isn’t very popular.

Then Mae finds out that Paul broke out of jail and is now dead. He was found murdered in the lake at Happy Trails. She is now the top suspect. Detective Hank Sharp thinks that she did it, as she has every motive to have done so. But so did the people that her spouse screwed over. Can Mae find someone who believes her? Or the evidence to clear her name? Find out by reading this cozy mystery!

Deserts, Driving, & Derelicts is the second novel in the Camper & Criminals Cozy Mystery series by Tonya Kappes. In the first story, readers met Mae West, and now continue to follow her story.

Mae adapted to the camping lifestyle after a while and is happy working as the Happy Trails Campground owner. The campground has even started to become popular, attracting families on vacation that want to enjoy nature and the hiking trails, swimming, and fishing that this spot offers.

Meanwhile, Betts Hager needs assistance with her cleaning business as she has too much work. Mae offers to help to make a little cash. So it turns out that the first house she’s going to clean is a mansion owned by Tammy Jo Bentley, an heiress. Mae works hard and makes sure that the mansion is totally clean so that it will be ready for the meeting of the Kentucky Kennel Association. Tammy Jo has a poodle named Fifi that is going to be participating and the heiress wants to look at suitors that could become the father of her puppies.

But before the meeting can take place, Fifi’s nanny is found dead. She’s been stabbed, and it’s a clear case of murder. Did she die protecting the dog or is this a planned hit? Will Mae help Tammy Jo find the killer or stick to cleaning and camping management? Read this mystery to find out!
