Adrianne Byrd
Adrianne Byrd has always preferred to live within the realms of her imagination where all of the men are gorgeous and the women are worth whatever trouble they manage to get into.
She was born in Memphis, Tennessee on November 23, 1970 into a military family. As an army brat, she traveled throughout Europe and learned to appreciate and value different cultures. Her big brother introduced her to romance novels when she was thirteen, and she developed her interest in fiction writing.
She found a way out of her awkward teen years and into a world of fictional friends that would stick with her for a lifetime. It wasn’t all that long before her imagination took flight and she began writing love stories of her own. Within just a year, she finished her first book, which she vowed would never see the light of day.
Writing stayed a hobby until the year 1994 when a coworker approached her with an article on Romance Writers of America. Who knew there was an organization of women that were just like her? By 1996 she’d sold her very first novel, called “Defenseless”, to Kensington Publishing.
Adrianne has been featured in many national publications, including Upscale, Today’s Black Woman, and Heart and Soul. She has also won local awards for screenwriting.
Adrianne has also written under the pen names De’nesha Diamond (writing urban romance), A. J. Byrd (young adult), and Layla Jordan.
Adrianne won two Emma Awards for “Comfort of a Man”, Favorite Traditional Romance in 2003, and “King’s Passion” for Best Romance Sequel in 2012. She won three RT Awards for “Comfort of a Man” for Best Multicultural, “Heart’s Secret” for Best Multicultural, and “A Christmas Affair” for Best Kimani Romance. “Comfort of a Man” won three Romance in Color Reader’s Choice Awards for Favorite Book, Favorite Heroine, and Favorite Hero. Shade’s of Romance awarded “Comfort of a Man” its Best Arabesque Romance award.
She died at the age of 49 on October 27, 2020, after beating cancer twice and had recent health problems. With pre-existing conditions and the threat of COVID-19, her health wound up taking a turn for the worse.
Adrianne loved being a role model for and spending time with Courtney, her niece. She is survived by her niece, two sisters, and her mom.
“Defenseless” is the first stand alone novel and was released in 1997. Her so-called life.
Instead of flirting with cute guys at parties, hanging out with her friends, or doing anything that a normal sixteen year old does after school, Tangie Burton is an unpaid maid, babysitter, and cook in her own home. And still she manages to ace all of her classes. But does her workaholic mom even notice everything that Tangie does? Or what is really going on with her troubled big sister? Or that Tangie’s losing it? Doubtful.
So when Marcus, Tangie’s best friend, shows up with problems of his own and suggests that they leave everything and everybody behind, she uncharacteristically says yes. And off they go on a road trip that’ll mean some major changes for everybody back home and the two of them.
“Measure of a Man” is the first novel in the “Adams Sisters” series and was released in 2004. Can love ever overcome a lie? A woman desperately fights her attraction to her brother’s boyfriend, however he doesn’t know that he is not gay, and that he also desires her. Peyton Garner’s older brother Flex means the world to her, and when he decides to move from San Jose to Atlanta after a bad break up with his lover, her whole family’s upset about it. The only consolation is the news that he has found a new man, named Lincoln Carver, who is also a firefighter.
Flex has not been entirely truthful, however. Lincoln, who is actually straight, knows nothing about this supposed relationship with Flex. Fate brings Lincoln and Peyton together under rather unusual circumstances, and sparks start flying. As Lincoln realizes that he’s fallen for Flex’s little sister, he resists telling his buddy the truth and decides to pursue Peyton. However Lincoln gets invited to a family wedding as the guest of Peyton and her brother, is true love going to win out once Flex’s secret gets revealed?
“Unforgettable” is the first novel in the “Unforgettable Hinton” series and was released in 2004. Marcel Taylor, a ladies’ man, got his nickname of Casanova Brown the old fashioned way. By earning it. His life of privilege has been filled with the finest women and the finer things, however he’s getting bored with all of it. Until this mysterious seductress enters into his world.
Marcel meets “Mayte” at a Masquerade ball, he is powerless to resist her seductive charms and is desperate to learn her real identity. Mayte, underneath the mask, is barely a stranger to the infamous Casanova Brown. But, once revealed, she will show him the face of love finally.
“King’s Passion” is the first novel in the “House of Kings” series and was released in 2011. The sexy King brothers own this successful bachelor party planning business and a string of upscale clubs across the country. What could possibly be better than living the single life in some of the world’s most glamorous of cities? Finding a woman worth giving it all up for.
Eamon King organizes some of the wildest bachelor parties in Las Vegas. They’re so wild that his recent client winds up marrying one of the strippers. Now Victoria Gregory, the jilted bride-to-be, has filed a lawsuit against Eamon’s company for millions. Problem is that Eamon’s never been so turned on by anybody as he is by the voluptuous and beautiful Victoria.
Eamon is certain that all he must do to charm his way out of the lawsuit is to charm his way into the very angry Victoria’s bed. It’s a win-win, yeah? Wrong. Because every single white-hot moment that they are together makes him realize that he has found the one and only woman able to make him lose his heart.
