Witch P.I. Mystery is a series of novels written by Adele Abbott. The books are mysteries with a supernatural element.
+The Story
The Witch P.I. Mystery series is supposed to fall in the mystery genre, and to an extent that is true. However, Adele Abbott tends to place more focus on the ordinary life that her protagonist lives than the mystery or even the supernatural.
The Witch P.I. Mystery series follows the exploits of Jill Gooder. When the series begins, Jill is just a normal girl. She is a private investigator with a crazy cat but she is still pretty normal. Jill wasn’t exactly born to do Private Eye work.
Her father was the one with the private eye business. But when he died, it made all the sense in the world for Jill to follow in his footsteps and take up private eye work. Jill’s father left her armed with a couple of skills to keep the business running, not to mention his secretary.
Winky the one-eyed cat was a later addition. Jill rescued him and decided to keep him. Winky continues to keep her company, his mischief and cantankerous antiques making a life all the more adventurous.
At the start of the Witch P.I. Mystery series, Jill is called in to solve a case that has even the police stumped. Three women are dead and there is cause to believe that a serial killer might be on the loose.
Before Jill can give the case her proper attention, her mother dies. The last words she hears from her aren’t particularly pleasant. She calls Jill a Witch. Jill is initially and expectedly hurt. But then circumstances drive her to learn that her mother was being literal.
Jill is a real life witch, one with magical powers and everything. This begins Jill’s journey into the extraordinary. She makes it her mission to learn about her supernatural powers and the equally supernatural relatives she didn’t know about.
Being a witch isn’t all fun and games, though. Jill still has a job to do and despite the revelation of her magical heritage, she isn’t too keen on giving it up. So she keeps taking cases and putting her mind to solving them.
Every once in a while Jill comes across circumstances that force her to use her magical powers to solve a case. Over time, Jill grows quite proficient as a private eye, so much so that it becomes the norm for people to consult her whenever they come across a truly complex mystery.
But despite her determination to use her powers for good, there is more to being a witch than solving cases. Jill learns early on that there is an evil being called the Dark One that is out to get her. She doesn’t really understand why he is targeting her, and she doesn’t have the time to figure things out.
It is imperative that she master her powers, that way she can prepare to fight him when he next makes his move.
The Witch P.I. Mystery Books are simple, very short and mostly fluff. They are self-published and only available on Amazon. Most people have probably come across these Adele Abbott novels which are sometimes offered free.
People gravitate towards them because they are like palette cleansers, simple distractions designed to provide temporary entertainment before one moves on to a larger more complicated literary work.
The books are definitely mysteries, even though some readers might attempt to deny that fact. Every Witch P.I. Mystery novel has a mystery at its heart. However, the mysteries are usually the basic kind, easy to figure out with the numerous clues provided. Most readers will tell you that they usually get the mysteries solved even before they get to the halfway mark.
Most books tend to emphasize Jill’s personal life. Her quirks are a source of entertainment and so are the awkward situations she keeps stumbling into. The protagonist develops a romance with a police detective fairly early on, and that particular relationship eventually comes to dominate the plots of some of the earliest novels in the Witch P.I. Mystery series.
Jill definitely spends a lot of time worrying about her track record with men, this despite the fact that the manner in which she treats the men she meets isn’t always pleasant. When Jill isn’t worried about Men, she is dealing with her sister Kathy who is written to be one of the most irritating human beings in the series, this not taking into account her equally annoying children.
Most of the Witch P.I books are standalone and can be read as such. Each new book focuses on a new mystery. Each book also finds Jill dealing with a new personal and professional challenge, not to mention whatever new case has come her way.
The Adele Abbott novels have quite a number of detractors despite their many adoring fans. In fact, many of the detractors were once fans of the Witch P.I books who believe that the series went off the rails because it ran for too long.
With more than two dozen Witch P.I novels written so far, the books definitely begin to lose their charm, not because of Adele’s writing but the fact that she clearly doesn’t have any more stories to tell. As such, many of the books feel unnecessary, introducing very thin plots whose mysteries feel all but irrelevant.
The central theme of the series, the one involving the dark one, receives almost no attention throughout the series’ run, with Adele only ever revealing enough information about the villain to keep the series dragging on for a little longer.
