Conrad County is a series of romance books by the New York Times bestselling author of romance, mystery, and thrillers novels Rachel Lee. Rachel began her Conrad County series in 2012 when Exile’s End, the first book, was published. The series boasts over sixty books with tremendous and positive readers reviews, with some having won awards.
Exile’s End
Exile’s End is the first in the Conrad County series, and by reading the first chapter, you can clearly feel that the story is a bit dated, with plenty of metaphors used by the characters for what they’ve been through or were feeling.
We are introduced to Ransom, a CIA operative who comes to Conrad County to a time of his own and also recovers after being held captive and tortured for four years. His wife double-crossed him and even had the guts to abort his child. His legs are held together by metal and bears many physical scars, but he hopes that the emotional scars are finally over. His friend Nate is a local sheriff who gets Ransom, a handyman at a local handyman’s shop known as Mandy’s place.
The owner, Mandy, is a woman afraid of emotional risks as she’s got as many emotional scars in her life as the physical scars in Ransom’s body.
She lost her parents, put up for adoption, moved from one foster home to the next, and took her refuge as a writer and a teacher. Her beloved husband chased her for close to three years; the two were happy, but then he died, and their baby was stillborn. For the past four years, she doesn’t want anything to do with love, and all she does now is write to drain her pain.
Mandy treats her new employee-Ransom less of a guest and more of a friend. She looks at his scared body and assures him that he shouldn’t be afraid or ashamed. They soon move from friendship towards something more- with shared kisses and caressing. But Mandy has a tendency to get scared, and soon someone is after Ransom.
Cherokee Thunder
The second book in the Conrad County series introduces us to Micah Parish, a local deputy sheriff. He’s six feet tall, four inches of solid muscle, rugged, half Cherokee, and a proud loner.
On the other hand, we meet Faith Williams, a mother-to-be. She’s a fragile blonde running for her life. She is quiet and, at the same time, scared of her own shadow that might catch up on her.
Protecting the residents of Conrad County is sheriff Micah’s job, but protecting Faith is about to become a full-time job forever. She’s pregnant, alone, and often stalked by her manipulative ex-husband, and so she needs more than a place to seek refuge but also want’s a shoulder to lean on. She needs someone who can end the nightmare on her behalf, and Micah is the only person who can fulfill that.
Miss. Emmaline and the Archangel
Gage Dalton is a man who’s been to hell and back. He’s a man who knows what it’s like to lose everything in his life and has sworn never ever to care again. But all that could soon change after he meets the careful and cautious Emmaline Conard.
Emmaline is a woman full of warmth and compassion, but she finds herself in trouble. But for Gage, he doesn’t understand why a woman like her put her trust in him, after all, that she had been through. But he vowed to himself that not a single man would ever hurt her again. But someone is soon stalking her, and Emma knows that something terrible might happen. And then, suddenly, Gage walks into her life and soon dives into her heart. He’s a man dangerous yet unpredictable, but still, the only man who could make her safe and whole again.
A Conard County Courtship
A Conard County Courtship is the 54th book in the Conard County series by Rachel Lee. It’s a story of a sweet romance between two people.
We meet a young woman named Vanessa. Her family left the picturesque town of Conard County when she was just a kid after her dad lost his ranch and money to a scamming friend.
The scammer also scammed many other people in the town, leaving Vanessa’s father blaming himself and feeling responsible for following his suit. The guilty feeling haunted her father and totally ruined his desire to live, and his attitude also affected Vanessa’s view of the town, and she never wanted to go back and confront scorn. Before she knew it, she finds herself inhering a house from the man who had caused his family and other townspeople all the trouble.
Then we meet Tim, a local contractor hired to do repair and maintenance works to the house that Vanessa inherited. He’s a widower with a young son still grieving the loss of his wife. He is an all-around man, a lovely young man who’s sensitive to Vanessa’s feelings. He’s also a great father to his son, Matthew. The author depicts some well-crafted scenes that will likely remind you of your own kids.
On the other hand, you’ll also fall in love with Vanessa. She’s a strong and yet vulnerable young woman who’s had survived a rough childhood caused by her parent’s inability to confront what had befallen them. In the beginning, she’s a character who seems all buttoned up emotionally, but the author does allow her to undergo some significant changes in the end.
You will enjoy the relationship developing between Vanessa and Tim. Sparks fly all over between them right from the beginning, even though they try to suppress them. Vanessa was ready for something more than friendship, but Tim wasn’t ready to risk his heart again, but he’s protective of Vanessa from the moment he meets her.
If you enjoy reading romance books with a bit of intense suspense, then it’s highly recommended you grab a copy of the Conard County series by Rachel Lee.
